Beautiful fruit, sweeter quality than every year

As a mountainous district bordering Laos, Huong Son (Ha Tinh) is blessed with many natural products, including the delicious Bu orange variety with a unique flavor. These days, the hill gardens in the mountainous district of Huong Son are ablaze with the golden color of ripe Bu oranges. Orange growers are even more excited because this year the oranges have a good harvest, beautiful fruit, sweeter taste, and higher prices than previous years.

Taking us to visit a garden of more than 300 orange trees ripening brightly on the hillside, each tree laden with fruit, Mr. Phan Dinh Han in Kim Loc village, Kim Hoa commune (Huong Son district) smiled contentedly: "This year, the yield is the same as last year, however, the quality of the oranges is rated higher, the oranges ripen evenly, are beautiful, and sweet because the family follows the technical process and converts care to organic direction".

Accordingly, Mr. Han mainly uses decomposed manure to fertilize his orange trees 2-3 times a year. To prevent weeds, he covers the base with green plants, straw, etc. With orange trees that are nearly ten years old, to prevent the fruit from falling to the ground, he has to use bamboo stakes to prop up the branches, and at the same time prune dry branches and branches with pests. With an estimated output of more than 20 tons of oranges, the current selling price is from 40-50 thousand VND/kg and will increase during the Lunar New Year, Mr. Han expects to earn nearly 1 billion VND.

Selling price is double last year

At this time, the orange garden of more than 400 trees of Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hao in village 9, Ham Truong commune (Huong Son district) has been dyed a bright yellow color. In order for the orange trees to grow sustainably, his family has researched and carefully implemented the organic care process, producing beautiful, even fruit, sweet, delicious quality, ensuring safety.

To have orange products ready for Tet, right from the beginning of the year, Mr. Hao's family has applied techniques, proactively fertilized, and found ways to delay the ripening of oranges. Currently, many traders have placed orders at higher prices than last year, but Mr. Hao is not in a hurry to sell but is waiting for Tet to get a higher price.

As a long-time orange grower in Ham Truong commune, this year, Ms. Le Thi Ly is very excited when 1 hectare of oranges gives a high yield, expected to reach nearly 10 tons of fruit. Ms. Ly happily said: "This year, the weather is favorable for orange trees to grow and develop. Besides, since the beginning of the year, my family has invested in fertilization and pest control, so this year's orange crop is good, the fruit is gradually ripening, waiting to be harvested to serve the Tet market". Recently, Ms. Ly's family has also gradually harvested small and medium-sized oranges. She is waiting until close to Tet to sell the big and beautiful fruits because they will fetch a higher price.

The harvest season of Huong Son oranges begins in early December of the lunar calendar and lasts until after Tet. Oranges are the main fruit tree of Huong Son district, contributing significantly to promoting agricultural production in particular and the socio-economic development of the area in general. On average, 1 hectare of Huong Son oranges brings in 100 - 150 million VND, with fruit-laden gardens earning 300 - 400 million VND/ha.

In addition to expanding the area, in recent years, people have actively applied science and technology to care. This year, the oranges are beautiful in appearance, of guaranteed quality, and at the beginning of the season, the price at the garden is commonly from 40,000 - 60,000 VND/kg, double the previous year. Near Tet, the price of oranges is expected to increase even higher.

Ham Truong Commune is considered the capital of growing pomelos in Huong Son District with a total area of nearly 400 hectares, of which more than 300 hectares have produced fruit, with an average yield estimated at 12 - 13 tons/ha. The commune currently has 1 pomelo cooperative achieving 3-star OCOP products and 36 cooperatives growing VietGAP pomelos.

"To continue to enhance the brand and increase the value of specialty pomelo products, in recent times, Ham Truong commune has continued to promote the role of cooperatives and cooperative groups in leading farmers to develop production in the direction of VietGAP and organic standards, thereby improving productivity and product quality, Ms. Tran Thi Nham", Vice Chairman of Ham Truong Commune People's Committee shared.

The Bu orange variety has large fruits (about 4 - 5 fruits/kg), round, beautiful yellow color, delicious quality. The outer skin of the orange is smooth, not rough like the navel orange, so it looks very beautiful. Those who have enjoyed this orange variety will surely remember the delicious taste on the tip of the tongue, the sweet taste, and the juiciness.

The pomelo tree has now become the fruit tree with the highest economic efficiency in Huong Son land (10-20 times higher than other crops such as lemon, tangerine, sugarcane, etc.). Especially during Tet, pomelo is a suitable fruit for gifts, and is also a popular fruit on the family altar in Ha Tinh.
