The Lunar New Year is a time for family reunions, where members enjoy many delicious dishes together. However, consuming large amounts of nutritious, high-protein foods can put a strain on the liver.
Dr. Huynh Tan Vu, a specialist working at the Day Treatment Unit of the University Medical Center of Ho Chi Minh City, Branch 3, advises: During days filled with meat and pastries, supplementing with berries such as grapefruit, oranges, lemons, avocados, blueberries, bananas, grapes, etc., helps combat satiety while providing vitamins, fiber, and minerals, which can reduce blood fat levels and protect liver cells.
Fruits that help cleanse the body.
Grapefruit, oranges, and lemons : Vitamin C and antioxidants in grapefruit help remove toxins from the body to improve liver health. "Hesperetin, a citrus flavonoid, is mainly found in citrus fruits (oranges, grapefruits, and lemons) and possesses many pharmacological properties. Hesperetin has been shown to be an effective dietary supplement to improve non-alcoholic fatty liver disease by inhibiting oxidative stress and inflammation in the liver," Dr. Vu said.
Oranges and lemons are rich in potassium, bioflavonoids, vitamin C, vitamin B5, vitamin B6, magnesium, and antioxidants, which help support detoxification and reduce liver inflammation in people with fatty liver disease. Patients can consume 2-3 oranges or lemons daily to improve liver health. However, those with digestive or stomach problems should consult their doctor.

Avocado : This fruit is recommended for people with fatty liver disease because it is rich in HDL cholesterol, which helps lower blood lipids and prevent liver damage. Avocados are also rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which slow the progression of fatty liver disease and repair liver damage.
Patients should consume about 1/2 to 1 avocado per day to control levels of bad cholesterol – one of the causes of fatty liver disease, atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular disease.
Blueberries : This fruit contains polyphenols, anthocyanins, and flavonoids that help fight oxidation and inflammation. Polyphenols in blueberries have been shown to prevent fatty liver disease by accelerating fat breakdown and reducing triglyceride accumulation in liver cells.
Adding cranberry juice to your diet has been found to help prevent cirrhosis.
Fruits that help cleanse the body.
Bananas : Rich in vitamins B6, C, and A, and containing a lot of resistant starch, bananas are very good for liver health. Resistant starch from green bananas improves metabolic parameters by regulating the expression of key proteins involved in lipid metabolism in the liver.
Grapes : Red grapes contain resveratrol, a powerful antioxidant that helps detoxify the liver, enhance liver function, keep cells healthy, and improve liver health as well as overall health. Grapes also contain vitamin C and magnesium, both excellent antioxidants that significantly reduce the symptoms of hepatitis and protect the body against infections.
Apples : A familiar fruit with a delicious flavor, apples provide many essential nutrients for the body, including vitamin C, fiber, carbohydrates, potassium, magnesium, etc., which help improve liver health very effectively.
Papaya : A rich source of fiber, minerals, and powerful antioxidants, including vitamins A, C, and E. Compounds found in papaya fruit and seeds can promote fat absorption while helping to remove toxins and excess cholesterol from the body.
"With the fruits mentioned above, you can eat them directly or drink them in the form of juice or smoothies. Drinking enough water is a simple and effective way to remove toxins from the body. Water helps increase blood circulation and speeds up the process of eliminating toxins from the body through urine, breath, and sweat," advised Dr. Huynh Tan Vu.
