Responding to Reuters on May 28, a member of the Council said that members voted 6:1 to appoint Mr. Conille as Haiti's interim prime minister.

"After discussions within the transitional council at hearings with candidates for prime minister, Garry Conille has been given a high level of consensus to lead the government during this transitional period," Edgard Leblanc, head of the council, said on the X platform.
Conille's appointment as prime minister represents progress in Haiti's political process after Prime Minister Ariel Henry resigned in April. In 2021, then-Haitian President Jovenel Moise was assassinated. Haiti has been without a president since then. According to Haiti's constitution, the country must elect a new president by July 2026.
Previously, Mr. Conille served as Prime Minister of Haiti for only 7 months and resigned in February 2012. Mr. Garry Conille's resignation came after many rumors of conflicts surrounding the reconstruction of Haiti after the earthquake in January 2010. Mr. Conille recently held the position of Regional Director of UNICEF.
Haiti is currently in the midst of a serious political and social crisis caused by gang violence. According to UN estimates, about 2,500 people, including at least 82 children, have been killed or injured in gang conflict in Haiti. More than 360,000 people have been evacuated, mainly from the capital Port-au-Prince.
