Girl NTH (28 years old, Bac Giang) came to E Hospital for examination with difficulty moving her hip joint, pain in the groin area on both sides spreading down to the middle of her thigh, limping gait because her left leg was about 1 cm shorter than her right leg... The examination results showed that the girl had necrosis of the left femoral head, on the background of "petrification of bones" disease.
According to the patient, she had suffered from bone and joint pain since childhood and was treated medically with a diagnosis of brittle bone disease. It was not until 2017 that the female patient was diagnosed with “petrification of bone”.

For the past five years, the girl has been experiencing frequent hip pain on both sides, especially when moving or sitting cross-legged. Despite treatment, her condition has not improved, and she is completely dependent on painkillers. Notably, all three sisters in the girl's family have been diagnosed with the genetic disease "petrification of bones".
MSc. Dr. Nguyen Dinh Hieu, Deputy Head of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine, E Hospital, said that "petrification of bone" is a rare and dangerous genetic disease, with an incidence rate of only about 0.005%, equivalent to 1/200,000 people.
Patients with severe osteopetrosis often do not live more than 10 years due to severe manifestations in many organ systems such as the eyes, cardiovascular system, hematopoietic system, etc. In particular, in bones, this disease is characterized by the inactivation of osteoclasts, leading to an imbalance between the two processes of bone formation and bone destruction, increasing bone density and reducing bone elasticity. People with this disease often experience severe complications and there is no specific treatment method.
To save the patient, the doctors held an interdisciplinary consultation and decided to perform artificial hip replacement surgery for the girl. The difficult and complicated surgery was successful. The female patient is undergoing rehabilitation to soon return to normal life.
This is the second successful surgery for a patient with "petrification of bones" at E Hospital.
Doctors recommend that patients with "bone petrification" should avoid trauma as much as possible and only undergo medical intervention when absolutely necessary as prescribed by a doctor. Therefore, close monitoring after surgery is extremely important to ensure a smooth recovery process and minimize complications.
If you experience symptoms such as unusual joint stiffness or persistent pain of unknown cause, you should immediately go to a medical facility for examination and timely treatment to avoid the risk of the disease progressing further.
