Actively take care of sugarcane after flood

These days, farmers in Tan Ky district are actively taking care of sugarcane in the fields after the floodwaters have receded. One of the important steps in care is to remove old leaves to prevent disease and allow the sugarcane to absorb more light. For areas of sugarcane planted late, farmers plow the base of the plants and apply fertilizer.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai in Tan Long commune (Tan Ky) said that her family had 9 sao of raw sugarcane, which was completely submerged by the recent flood. After the water receded, some sugarcane fell down, so her family promptly erected them and covered them with soil to cover the roots.

“The sugarcane is now over 2m tall, and there are still a few months left until harvest, so the family is actively taking care of it to achieve high productivity and quality. If the factory continues to buy at over 1 million VND/ton this year, sugarcane growers will make a good profit,” Ms. Mai shared.

Mr. Nguyen Sy Hai - officer in charge of agricultural affairs, Song Con Sugarcane Joint Stock Company said: At this time, sugarcane is in the stage of spreading. However, in some areas, stem borers and white cotton fiber aphids have appeared. Therefore, to prevent aphids, farmers need to remove all old leaves to make the sugarcane fields airy; at the same time, monitor pests and diseases for early treatment. In general, this year the weather is quite favorable, so sugarcane grows stably. During the recent flood, although some areas were flooded, after the water receded, farmers handled it promptly so it was not affected.

Mr. Nguyen Sy Hai also added: “Currently, in addition to taking care of sugarcane, agricultural staff also survey the traffic situation within the raw material area so that the Company can repair the traffic to serve the 2023-2024 sugarcane harvest. This is one of the important tasks, every year the company invests 1 billion VND to implement. The company's purpose is to ensure convenient traffic for vehicles to enter the fields to transport sugarcane, reducing costs for farmers".

Improve the quality of sugar products

Identifying that improving sugar products is the survival of the factory and helping farmers have a stable income from sugarcane, Song Con Sugarcane Joint Stock Company has been investing in improving production line technology.

Mr. Nguyen Ba Quy - Deputy Director of Song Con Sugar Joint Stock Company said: Improving the quality of sugar products is one of the development strategies of the unit. Last year, the company invested billions of VND to install new technology sugar cookers and now continues to improve the sugar drying system to increase the grain size and reduce the moisture content of sugar. In the current market, many sugar products have beautiful designs and good quality; the company is constantly improving its products to meet customer requirements and be competitive in the market.

According to Mr. Quy, in recent years, the sugar market has been stable at a high level, so the price of raw sugarcane is also purchased by the company at a high price, over 1 million VND/ton. This is an opportunity for people to stick with sugarcane and stabilize their lives.

“If sugar prices remain high at harvest time, raw sugarcane will still be purchased at the same price as last year. However, the market can change, so the company cannot confirm the price of sugarcane in the future,” said Mr. Nguyen Ba Quy.

Like previous years, the 2023-2024 crushing season of Song Con Sugarcane Joint Stock Company will purchase raw sugarcane for farmers in early December. Currently, the company's raw material area remains stable at nearly 5,000 hectares, of which more than 3,500 hectares are in Tan Ky district, the rest are in Do Luong, Yen Thanh, Anh Son, Con Cuong districts...

The main sugarcane varieties grown are KK3 and LK92-11. These are two sugarcane varieties with high yield, good quality, and drought resistance, and have been planted in Tan Ky for many years. In order to continuously increase the productivity and output of the sugarcane raw material area, Song Con Sugarcane Joint Stock Company continues to select new sugarcane varieties with potential to gradually replace the old varieties.

In the 2023-2024 sugarcane crop, Song Con Sugarcane Joint Stock Company will support farmers with 7,000 tons of processed sugarcane sludge and provide loans for about 2,000 tons of various fertilizers. In addition, the company will also test-plant the new K95-51 sugarcane variety that has just been imported from Thailand (this sugarcane variety grown in Thailand yields over 140 tons/ha). In the recent pressing season, the company invested 5 billion VND in installing high-tech sugar cookers from India to improve the quality of commercial sugar.
