Rach Mop sluice gate construction started on January 5, 2023, in Nhon My commune, Ke Sach district and Song Phung commune, Long Phu district, Soc Trang province. The sluice gate is built on Rach Mop river with a scale of: 85m wide with 2 sluice gates (each gate is 35m wide), 1 boat gate gate is 15m wide. In addition, there are auxiliary works such as a management house with reinforced concrete foundation and columns, automatic monitoring and surveillance system.
According to the investor - Irrigation Investment and Construction Management Board 10 (Board 10), the Rach Mop sluice gate project was handed over the boundary and construction scope to the People's Committees of Ke Sach and Long Phu districts from August 26, 2022 to carry out compensation and site clearance work, and the parties have handed over the clean site (permanent land compensation scope) to the construction contractor from August 2023. The investor and contractor actively and diligently implemented the construction of the items at the same time, worked overtime and overtime to complete the mechanical installation of sluice gates, hydraulic cylinders and meet the conditions to operate the project to carry out drought and salinity prevention and control work to serve production and people's lives in the dry season of 2024 - 2025. Currently, the project has been completed more than 90%, can be operated, and can control salinity according to the planned schedule in March 2025.
Chairman of Soc Trang Provincial People's Committee Tran Van Lau proposed that the Irrigation Investment and Construction Management Board 10 speed up the construction progress, soon complete Rach Mop sluice gate and temporarily hand it over to the province for operation to serve the work of preventing salinity in the dry season of 2024 - 2025; support the province to temporarily operate when the salinity in front of the sluice gate is >2g/liter to serve the urgent need to prevent salinity from penetrating deep into the fields.
The leaders of Soc Trang Provincial People's Committee proposed that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development promptly allocate capital to clear the ground and construct the remaining 5 sluices (Muong Khai 2 sluice, Tra Ech sluice, Cai Trung sluice, Cau Truong sluice, Tra Quyt sluice) under the Southern Hau River Water Control Project. At the same time, it proposed to prioritize investment in embankment to prevent erosion of Rach Mop riverbank, Song Phung commune, Long Phu district with a budget of about 100 billion VND, investment in embankment to prevent erosion of riverbank in Phung An hamlet, An My commune, Ke Sach district with a budget of about 100 billion VND and prioritize the implementation of Dai Ngai sluice and My Xuyen sluice.
Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Hiep emphasized the importance of the project in controlling salinity, preserving freshwater, creating stable and sustainable production conditions for the natural area of 19,220 hectares in Ke Sach, Chau Thanh, Long Phu districts and Soc Trang city.
The Deputy Minister also said that the remaining 5 sluices are expected to be implemented in the early second quarter of 2025. Once completed, they will help minimize the impact caused by drought and salinity, and support the supply of fresh water to cope with high salinity waves on the Hau River for a natural area of 36,710 hectares in Ke Sach and Chau Thanh districts (Soc Trang province), Chau Thanh district and Nga Bay town (Hau Giang province).
