Teacher detained after being accused of slapping student 12 years ago

Last week, a clip of her hitting a 3-year-old girl on the back went viral on social media in France. Despite the girl bursting into tears in class, the teacher did not comfort her, and instead... beat her more and left her alone in a corner of the classroom.

Not stopping there, this week, a second parent - Ms. Djankinba Bangoura - spoke up about her son being abused by this teacher 12 years ago.

After Ms. Bangoura's complaint, local police summoned the teacher to work and detained her.

Ms. Bangoura decided to go to the police to provide more information because she felt outraged by the kindergarten teacher's behavior. Ms. Bangoura said her teenage son recognized the teacher who slapped him when he saw the clip that went viral online.

The teenager mentioned the incident to his mother, prompting Bangoura to take action. Speaking to French media, Bangoura said her son was still haunted by the slap from his kindergarten teacher, who was only four years old at the time.

"When my child started kindergarten, he was very excited to go to school because I had prepared him carefully for school. However, when I asked him about school, I saw that he showed fear and discomfort every time the teacher was mentioned. He said he liked going to school because he got to see his friends, but he didn't like seeing his teacher."

One time after school, her son told her about being slapped hard by his teacher in class. He even described the teacher's actions so that his mother could understand.

Ms. Bangoura then went to the school and spoke directly to the teacher and the school board, but at that time, the school defended the teacher. Both the teacher and the school board believed that her son had made up the story. However, she still went to work with the school many times, not letting the matter go down easily.

The school eventually promised to conduct an internal investigation. The result of the investigation was that the teacher denied all accusations. It was only now, when the clip appeared showing the teacher beating the 3-year-old, that the police investigation was launched.

Police said the teacher’s record had never had any complaints or negative feedback. The school also had no record of any internal investigation into the teacher.

The incident with the 3-year-old girl reminded Ms. Bangoura of her own feelings of helplessness back then. "My son is now 16 years old, 12 years have passed, but there are times when he still remembers the first shock of his life when he was slapped by his teacher at school," Ms. Bangoura confided.

The family of the 3-year-old girl stressed that after only a few days of attending school, their daughter has suffered "severe" psychological damage. They have taken her to see a psychologist to assess her situation after what happened at school.

Philippe Goujon, the mayor of the 15th district, where the kindergarten where the controversial incident occurred, said the teacher who committed the offense was a senior member of the school.

Initially, when working with the kindergarten's board of directors about the controversial clip, the teacher did not offer any explanation for her actions. However, at the present time, when working with the police, the teacher said she was very remorseful for what happened.
