Girl receives 3.8 billion VND PhD scholarship in computer science

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên22/08/2024

With many outstanding achievements in studying and researching, female student Vo Thuc Khanh Huyen, a student at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, has received a full scholarship for a PhD in computer science at the Max Planck Institute (Germany) worth 3.8 billion VND.
Since she was a student in the specialized math class at Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted (Quang Tri province), Huyen has shown her talent and won many awards in math such as: third prize in the national excellent student competition in 2019... In the same year, Huyen was directly admitted to the computer science major and continued to pass the entrance exam to the talented bachelor's class at Hanoi University of Science and Technology. In her third year of university, Huyen was accepted as an intern at FPT Software AI Center. 6 months later, Huyen became an official research staff when she was only a third-year student. Here, Huyen reads scientific articles every day to update the latest methods and techniques. Besides, Huyen also thinks of new ideas for the problem she is working on or comes up with improved solutions.

"Currently, many female students have demonstrated their ability in researching artificial intelligence. In a working environment with many men, I received a lot of help. Female students often have the advantage of being meticulous and detailed in the research process. However, to pursue a long-term topic, the research time in the lab is so long that my health cannot be guaranteed. Perhaps the biggest obstacle for women is physical strength," Huyen shared. While studying and working, Huyen still ensures balance and maintains good grades. "The company always creates conditions for me to work at home if I have class time. I have strengths in researching AI, programming... This knowledge is taught very thoroughly at school, so it is more convenient when applied in practice at the company. In addition, during my work at the company, I can apply those experiences to solve school projects on AI and programming," Huyen shared. In 2022, Huyen had a paper titled Improving Neural Ordinary Differential Equations with Nesterov's Accelerated Gradient Method accepted at the NeurIPS artificial intelligence conference in the US (2022). The paper researched the topic Neural ODE: Neural network differential equations. Neural ODE is a deep learning model that uses differential equations (ODEs) to model continuous changes in data over time, instead of using discrete neural network layers as in traditional models. The female student spent 6 months researching, this paper contributed significantly to applying for a scholarship at the Max Planck Institute.

In 2023, the female student graduated with honors in computer science with a grade point average (GPA) of 3.87/4.0. "I am always serious, focused, and diligent in studying, researching, and doing projects. In addition, finding a group of friends who are similar in many aspects will help the learning process better," Huyen said. Wanting to change the environment and having a passion for traveling, right after graduating, Huyen applied to transfer to FPT Software AI Center in Ho Chi Minh City to work. During her studies and work, Huyen often takes trips for herself. Up to now, the female student has traveled to more than 35 provinces and cities. The last time Huyen explored the Western provinces: "I was very impressed because the Western people are friendly, the food is delicious, especially the fish sauce hotpot. I was very moved when I set foot in Ca Mau province, the southernmost point of the country. I really like traveling because I can recharge my energy after days of stressful research in the lab," Huyen said. At the end of July, Huyen participated in guiding students at the PiMA Summer Camp held at the University of Natural Sciences, Ho Chi Minh City. Here, Huyen guided the campers to do small projects on the application of mathematics. At the same time, she provided knowledge about the application of mathematics in other areas of life such as AI. Huyen is learning basic German to prepare for her study abroad trip at the end of September 2024. Dr. Ngo Van Linh, a lecturer at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, commented: "Huyen is a sociable girl, open to everyone around her, often helping to connect members in the lab. With diligence and seriousness, Huyen has achieved good results in her studies, especially a high GPA and received scholarships to encourage studying at school". Dr. Linh added: "Huyen has strengths in English, math, programming skills, especially the ability to synthesize research on a topic very well. Huyen's documents and notes are still useful for students in the next course".
