The Quad Fellowship program was originally intended for students from the “quad” – Japan, the US, Australia and India – to pursue master’s or doctoral degrees at top US universities specializing in STEM. The “Quad” refers to the framework of cooperation and collaboration between these four countries.

The Quad Fellowship has now been expanded to candidates from 10 ASEAN countries, including Vietnam, after an event at the White House on January 30.

The event was held to celebrate the success of the program and honor the first 100 candidates (25 from each Quad member country) who received scholarships in 2021, according to Pie News on February 13. In 2021, science and technology cooperation and exchange programs were the focus of the Quad summit.

Quad Fellowship provides $40,000 scholarships to STEM students to pursue master's or doctoral degrees at US universities. Students will receive additional funding from the universities.

Students from ASEAN countries (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam) can apply from 1 February to 1 April 2024. Applicants can click here for information on application requirements and eligibility.

“We are delighted that the Quad Fellowship is expanding to include students from ASEAN countries. This demonstrates Quad’s commitment to delivering tangible benefits to the Indo-Pacific region,” said Jonah Kokodyniak, vice president of the IIE, a US-based nonprofit organization for international higher education.

Since January 2024, IIE has administered the Quad Fellowship program. The organization also administers the U.S. State Department's Fulbright program.

“The aim of the second cohort is to select a balanced number of fellows across the four countries of Australia, India, Japan and the United States, as well as from ASEAN countries,” said Mr Kokodyniak.

According to Mr. Kokodyniak, the expansion of the Quad Fellowship program contributes to promoting collaboration between the next generation of scientists and technologists in the Indo-Pacific region.
