On the afternoon of June 14, at the National Assembly House, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man met and encouraged 100 delegates who are outstanding national voluntary blood donors in 2024. Also attending was National Assembly Vice Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Thanh.

The meeting was very meaningful as it was held on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of World Blood Donor Day (June 14, 2004 - June 14, 2024) with the theme chosen by the World Health Organization as "Thank you to all who donated blood".

Reporting on the results of voluntary blood donation and honoring activities in 2024, Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan, Head of the National Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation, said that after 30 years of formation and development, with the attention of Party and State leaders; the support of departments, branches, organizations, and agencies from the central to local levels; the joint efforts and consensus of generations of health workers, the Red Cross Society, and volunteers, the voluntary blood donation movement in our country has grown and developed day by day, gradually meeting the needs of people's health care. By the end of 2023, Vietnam had received over 21.3 million blood donors.

Minister Dao Hong Lan affirmed that voluntary blood donation has become a movement with widespread influence, attracting and receiving the attention of the whole society. The past three decades have truly been a "revolution" that has changed the awareness of tens of millions of people about voluntary blood donation. If in the past, the blood donors were mainly young people and students, now it has been expanded to all sectors of society, regardless of age, gender, profession, ethnicity, religion, etc.

Among the 100 outstanding delegates today, 9 delegates donated blood 20-29 times, 53 delegates donated blood 30-49 times, 26 delegates donated blood 50-69 times, 7 delegates donated blood 70-99 times, and 2 delegates donated blood over 100 times. In addition to participating in voluntary blood donation, the delegates also actively promoted and mobilized the community and their families to participate in voluntary blood donation.

At the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Van Truong (Quang Tri province), who donated blood 51 times, shared an unforgettable memory in 2021 when the COVID-19 epidemic spread throughout the country, making it difficult for people to travel. However, when mobilized by the hospital, Mr. Truong went to the hospital to donate blood for a patient in need of an emergency blood transfusion. In that situation, Mr. Truong cherished every drop of blood even more because there were many patients who needed blood for transfusion. "I will donate blood until I am no longer eligible to donate blood," Mr. Nguyen Van Truong affirmed.

Speaking at the meeting, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man expressed his emotion and gratitude to the blood donors who attended today's meeting, representing millions of voluntary blood donors nationwide.

On behalf of the leaders of the Party, the State, and the Vietnam Fatherland Front, the National Assembly Chairman warmly commended all voluntary blood donors nationwide and thanked the kind and loving hearts in the community. The National Assembly Chairman also acknowledged, commended, and highly appreciated the advisory role of the Ministry of Health, the Vietnam Red Cross Society, and the activities of the Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation at all levels, agencies, and units. In particular, the pioneering, creative, and dedicated efforts of generations of leaders, cadres, employees, and volunteers of the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion have coordinated with other units to build, maintain, and develop a vibrant voluntary blood donation movement, imbued with love, and making an important contribution to caring for and protecting people's health.

Promoting the achieved results, to continue to maintain and develop, improve the quality, efficiency and sustainability of voluntary blood donation, the National Assembly Chairman requested the Ministry of Health, the Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation at all levels, agencies and units to further strengthen the attention and leadership of Party committees and authorities at all levels towards voluntary blood donation activities; promote the role of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, socio-political organizations, and social organizations in mobilizing and organizing blood donation.

"Along with changes in population structure, advances in medicine, as well as in hematology and blood transfusion, relevant agencies and organizations must develop solutions to maintain and develop regular blood donors and repeat blood donors so that voluntary blood donation activities become more stable and sustainable, ensuring safe and quality blood sources at all levels, including remote areas, border areas and islands," the National Assembly Chairman emphasized.

The National Assembly Chairman noted that it is necessary to continue improving the quality of propaganda and mobilization work, raising public awareness of the need for blood donation to ensure the availability of quality and safe blood and blood products; focusing on emulation, rewards, encouragement and motivation for blood donors and blood donation organizations. News agencies and newspapers should participate more actively to spread exemplary examples of blood donation in the community.

The National Assembly Chairman said that it is necessary to focus on applying digital transformation to blood donation management; connecting information, building a unified blood donor database, connecting between localities, blood centers, and hospitals that receive blood.

The Ministry of Health studies, evaluates, and reviews the system of legal documents related to blood transfusion activities and blood donors, to recommend to the Government to issue legal documents or submit them to the National Assembly or the National Assembly Standing Committee for consideration and promulgation according to their authority, promptly adjusting and supplementing them to suit reality.

The National Assembly Chairman believes that the exemplary blood donors and millions of voluntary blood donors across the country will continue to promote the spirit of humanity, the fine tradition of the nation, sharing their blood for the community and society. At the same time, these are also the core members, active propagandists, together spreading the spirit and noble gesture of voluntary blood donation./.
