This is listed as a class 1 carcinogen by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Taiwanese nephrologist Hong Yongxiang once shared a clinical case on the show "The Doctors Is So Spicy" saying that a 35-year-old man came in for treatment looking very tired and had symptoms of edema in his lower limbs. The man revealed that he had moved to a new house a year ago and had been prone to catching colds since then. His wife had a miscarriage not long after moving into the new house.

The man's left kidney was congenitally atrophied and he had only one kidney since childhood. After blood tests, it was discovered that his liver and kidney function were slightly impaired. When the doctor examined him, he discovered an irregular tumor, 2-3 cm in size, on the left side of his neck. After a biopsy, the man was diagnosed with stage II nasopharyngeal cancer, which went into remission after radiation therapy.

Why did a man get nasopharyngeal cancer at such a young age if he did not smoke or drink? Dr. Hong Yongxiang said he strongly suspected that the man had cancer due to formaldehyde poisoning from the decorations in his new house. As for the cause of his cold and runny nose, it is believed that the cause was too high a concentration of formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is listed as a class 1 carcinogen by the World Health Organization (WHO) and is one of the most common indoor air pollutants.

He added that the male patient's wife's miscarriage was also related to formaldehyde inhalation. However, his wife's symptoms were relatively mild. The reason was that his wife liked to drink water and eat vegetables and fruits. Water helps the body eliminate toxins. He said that some dark green vegetables rich in vitamin C and fiber can help the body eliminate toxins when defecating, so in daily life, one should drink plenty of water and eat vegetables.

Indoor air quality engineer Zhao Jinwei (Taiwan, China) said that excessive formaldehyde mainly comes from new furniture and new home decoration paint. Formaldehyde is added during production and transportation to prevent insect invasion. Therefore, the formaldehyde content will be higher when a house is newly decorated, it will often exceed the standard by 2 to 3 times, and in severe cases, it can reach 3 to 4 ppm, which is about 50 times the standard.

Zhao Jinwei suggests that when purchasing furniture, you can choose decorative materials with low or even zero formaldehyde content, such as E0/E1 eco-board, to reduce the risk of formaldehyde emissions. He also points out that after moving into a new home, you should open more windows to maintain air circulation, which can allow outside air to dilute the concentration of formaldehyde in the house.
