Tourists pet therapy dog Alita at the airport
Traveling through major airports can be tiring and stressful for many passengers.
For the past two months, a team of five adorable dogs and their trainers have been present at several locations at Istanbul airport, mingling with passengers waiting for flights at the aviation hub that served more than 76 million passengers last year.
At the international departure gates, several dogs stand to greet passengers before passport control.
This cute squad is working in 5 days rotation and maximum 3 hours/day. The working schedule varies depending on the personality, health and psychology of each member.
The "Pet Squad" has undergone rigorous training, traveling to domestic and international stations. Two more members will soon join the squad after completing their training.
Veterinarian Volkan Arslan, who coordinates the project, said they launched the dog therapy project to provide a better flying experience and help customers reduce stress.
A passenger strokes one of five therapy dogs as they roam Istanbul airport, looking for stressed passengers to try to calm their nerves before boarding their flights.
According to airport management, the program has received positive feedback from passengers.
Dozens of airports in the United States have also implemented therapy dog programs. The concept was born after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, with the goal of bringing relaxation and comfort to passengers who are stressed due to air travel.
In addition to working at airports, therapy dogs are also trained to interact with people in hospitals, libraries and schools.
