President Luong Cuong affirmed that strengthening parliamentary relations is one of the important pillars of the two countries' diplomacy, contributing to promoting the Vietnam-Chile bilateral relationship.

According to a special correspondent of the Vietnam News Agency, on the morning of November 11, within the framework of an official visit to the Republic of Chile, at the National Assembly headquarters in the capital Santiago, President Luong Cuong met with Speaker of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the Chile-Vietnam Parliamentary Friendship Group Karol Cariola.

President of the House of Representatives Karol Cariola warmly welcomed President Luong Cuong to Chile; highly appreciated the important significance of this visit by President Luong Cuong, the first visit to Chile by a Vietnamese President in the past 15 years; affirmed that this visit will create momentum to further deepen the comprehensive partnership between the two countries through all Party, State and people-to-people diplomacy channels.

President Luong Cuong expressed his joy at his first official visit to Chile and appreciated the solidarity and support that the State, National Assembly and people of Chile have given to the Vietnamese people during the past struggle for national independence and liberation and the current national construction.

The President affirmed that Chile is one of the most important partners in Vietnam's overall foreign policy in the Latin American region; accordingly, this visit to Chile aims to continue promoting the Comprehensive Partnership to become more substantive and effective, while demonstrating the determination of the senior leaders and people of Vietnam in strengthening relations with Chile in particular and the Latin American region in general.

Speaker of the House of Representatives Karol Cariola expressed his admiration for the heroic history and indomitable spirit of the Vietnamese people in the just war to protect the country's independence, sovereignty and unity; emphasized that Chile was one of the first two countries in Latin America to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam (March 25, 1971) and said that this is a concrete demonstration of the sharing and solidarity of the Government and people of Chile with the people of Vietnam in their aspirations for freedom, peace, equality and national independence and is one of the important milestones of the Vietnam-Chile comprehensive partnership.

President Luong Cuong shared with Speaker of the House of Representatives Karol Cariola that the purpose of his official visit to Chile this time is to discuss and reach high-level consensus on measures to strengthen relations in all channels, including Party diplomacy, state diplomacy and people-to-people diplomacy, in which relations between the two legislative bodies play an important role, promoting the development of relations between the two countries in a more comprehensive direction.

The two leaders assessed that the relationship between the two countries and the two National Assemblies has developed positively in recent times, through regular exchanges of visits and bilateral meetings on the sidelines of multilateral conferences, which is a clear demonstration of the good relationship between the legislative bodies of the two countries.

The President affirmed that strengthening parliamentary relations is one of the important pillars of the two countries' diplomacy, contributing to promoting the Vietnam-Chile bilateral relationship in general as well as establishing and implementing a favorable legal corridor between the two countries in particular; expressing his belief that the establishment of the Friendship Parliamentary Group between Vietnam and Chile will be an important foundation to contribute to building a bridge between the two National Assemblies to continue promoting parliamentary relations.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives agreed that in the coming time, she will continue to promote cooperation between the two National Assemblies in exchanging legislative, supervising and deciding important issues of the country; promote cooperation between specialized agencies of the two National Assemblies in training, fostering, improving the capacity of officials, exchanging experiences in research, general consulting and organizing to serve the activities of the Parliaments; as well as continue to promote coordination mechanisms at multilateral forums such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and other multilateral parliamentary organizations; support each other's stance on regional and international issues of mutual concern.

The two sides also had in-depth discussions and shared their stances on many regional and international issues of mutual concern. Regarding the East Sea issue, the Speaker of the House of Representatives agreed that disputes over sovereignty and territory should be resolved by peaceful means, on the basis of respect for international law, especially the United Nations Charter and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982).

On this occasion, the President also conveyed to the Speaker of the Chilean House of Representatives the regards of the Vietnamese high-ranking leaders and the invitation to visit Vietnam by National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man at a time suitable for both sides./.
