4th place in Olympiad

In game 3 of the men's team event of the 2024 Olympiad, the Vietnamese chess team decided to field its strongest lineup including Le Quang Liem, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, Le Tuan Minh, and Tran Tuan Minh to compete with the Kazakhstan team.

Le Quang Liem and the Vietnamese chess team performed impressively at the 2024 Olympiad in Hungary.

Sitting at table number 1, world No. 14 player Le Quang Liem (elo 2,741) proved his role as a "leading bird" when he defeated Denis Makhnev (elo 2,551). At table number 2, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son (elo 2,633) let Kazybek Nogerbek (elo 2,519) hold him to a draw. At table number 3, Le Tuan Minh (elo 2,564) shared points with Alisher Suleymenov (elo 2,484) and at table number 4, Tran Tuan Minh (elo 2,434) excellently defeated Ramazan Zhamakhnov (elo 2,497).

The above result brought a 3-1 victory for the Vietnamese men's chess team against Kazakhstan. Thereby, Le Quang Liem and his teammates rose to 4th place on the rankings after 3 games, equal to the achievement of the Chinese team. A big challenge awaits Le Quang Liem and his teammates when they face the 4th seeded team Uzbekistan in game 4 tonight (September 14).

Vietnam chess team at Olympiad 2024

In the women's team event, the Vietnamese team also fielded a strong lineup including Pham Le Thao Nguyen, Vo Thi Kim Phung, Bach Ngoc Thuy Duong, and Le Thanh Tu, thereby winning an overwhelming 4-0 victory over the Singapore team. This result brought the Vietnamese women's chess team to 11th place on the rankings after 3 games. Thao Nguyen and her teammates' opponent in game 4 was the Armenian team.
