Below are 5 warning signs that your kidneys are "calling for help" that should never be ignored.
Abnormal skin color
The skin is the body's largest organ and is often one of the first to signal internal problems. When the kidneys fail, the skin becomes a "spokesperson" for the changes taking place inside the body.
The accumulation of waste in the blood due to the kidneys' inability to filter it causes the skin to lose its brightness, becoming dull or slightly yellow. Along with that, the condition of dry and itchy skin, especially on the soles of the feet, causes discomfort, affecting the patient's sleep and quality of life.
Swelling in the legs
Edema is one of the early warning signs your body sends when your kidneys are having trouble. When your kidneys fail, their ability to filter your blood and remove waste, especially sodium and excess water, is significantly reduced. This excess water builds up in your tissues, causing swelling.
We typically notice this most in our feet and ankles, where gravity pulls fluid down. However, edema can also appear in other areas, such as around the eyes, face, and even throughout the body.

Numbness and pain in the legs
When the kidneys fail, toxic waste products accumulate in the blood and cannot be filtered out. This leads to damage to the nerves, especially those far from the heart, such as those in the feet and legs. These nerves are responsible for transmitting sensation and controlling muscles, so when damaged, symptoms such as numbness, burning, and pain can occur.
Patients with chronic kidney failure often face many complications, of which calcium accumulation in soft tissue is a worrying problem. Calcium crystals forming under the skin not only cause pain but also make it difficult for wounds to heal, especially in areas that are subject to great pressure such as the feet and legs. This makes the patient feel pain, discomfort and affects the ability to move.
Itchy legs
Itching is a common and bothersome symptom in people with kidney disease. It is caused by a buildup of toxins in the blood, which irritate the sensory nerves under the skin and cause an inflammatory reaction. The itching sensation often spreads throughout the body, causing discomfort and affecting quality of life. Treating itching not only helps relieve symptoms but is also an important part of managing kidney disease.
Abnormal toenail changes
Changes in the shape and texture of toenails are one of the early warning signs of kidney disease. Specifically, toenails can become abnormally thick, brittle and break easily, and even turn pale yellow or dark in color. These changes often stem from a lack of essential nutrients and impaired absorption due to impaired kidney function.
