Warning about natural mushroom poisoning

Despite repeated warnings, there have been a number of cases of natural mushroom poisoning recently, resulting in many hospitalizations. Health experts recommend that people only eat cultivated mushrooms, knowing the species and origin of the mushrooms; and absolutely do not eat strange or wild mushrooms.

Recently, the Vietnam-Laos Friendship Military-Civilian Medical Station in Long Sap commune, Moc Chau district, Son La province promptly provided first aid and successfully saved the lives of four Lao children who were poisoned by wild mushrooms.

Recently, a number of localities have also recorded a series of mushroom poisoning cases. Typically, in Ha Tinh, the Provincial General Hospital has just received, provided emergency care, and treated 4 residents of Village 10, Ha Linh Commune, Huong Khe District, Ha Tinh Province who were suspected of being poisoned by eating mushrooms of unknown origin.

Or before that, in La Pan Tan commune, Muong Khuong district, Lao Cai province, there was a poisoning case after eating mushrooms, causing 3 people in a family to be hospitalized.

In addition, in Bao Yen and Van Ban districts of Lao Cai province, there were 2 cases of mushroom poisoning that caused 7 people to be hospitalized, some of them quite serious. Through epidemiological investigation, the Department of Food Safety and Hygiene of Lao Cai province determined that this was a case of food poisoning caused by natural toxins (wild mushrooms).

According to doctors, the patient with mushroom poisoning had typical symptoms of the digestive tract. Lao Cai General Hospital consulted with doctors at the Poison Control Center, Bach Mai Hospital to come up with the most effective treatment regimen for the patient.

Dr. Nguyen Trung Nguyen, Director of the Poison Control Center, Bach Mai Hospital (Hanoi), said that recently, there have been many cases of hospitalization and even death due to natural mushroom poisoning.

Natural mushrooms cannot be identified by the naked eye as poisonous or not, except for wood ear mushrooms. People cannot identify which mushrooms are poisonous, even experts can be mistaken. There are thousands of types of mushrooms, the number of poisonous mushrooms is not too many but it is very easy to confuse.

For example, some mushrooms look very beautiful but contain toxins such as amatoxin, causing many patients to die when eating these mushrooms.

According to Dr. Nguyen Trung Nguyen, the main cause of mushroom poisoning is due to people eating poisonous mushrooms, in addition, a small number of cases are due to people not ensuring hygiene when processing mushrooms. Symptoms of mushroom poisoning vary, commonly including stomach ache, nausea or diarrhea.

Each type of poisonous mushroom has its own signs when eaten. Usually, there are 2 groups of signs of poisoning when eating mushrooms. That is the group that shows early symptoms within 6 hours after eating and the group that shows late symptoms 6 hours after eating, even after 12 hours or longer, when the toxin has penetrated the body, at this time first aid measures will no longer be effective.

The late manifestation group is very dangerous, at this time the liver is damaged, internal organs are disordered... When discovered, the patient is in a state of liver failure, coma, kidney failure, and even death.

To prevent mushroom poisoning, health experts recommend that people do not eat wild mushrooms without testing. Families should only eat cultivated mushrooms, know the species and origin of the mushrooms, and ensure they are edible; absolutely do not eat strange or wild mushrooms.

In addition, with edible mushrooms, families should also use them when they are fresh, if they are spoiled or crushed, new toxins can form causing poisoning. When suspecting mushroom poisoning, patients need to go to the nearest medical facility for timely treatment.

Depression due to infertility

Mr. H. gradually became quiet, stressed, and depressed after visiting 5 medical facilities and being diagnosed with infertility.

According to the patient, he is 36 years old this year, married 12 years ago, and has a 10-year-old son. 6 years ago, Mr. H. contracted mumps, a complication that reduced his fertility but he did not know it. Last year, he and his wife wanted to have a second child but there was no good news.

Mr. H. and his wife took many traditional medicines but they were ineffective. After visiting 5 clinics, Mr. H. was tested and the results showed that he was secondary infertile (infertile after having children). This was a big shock and caused him to fall into a state of depression.

According to Dr. Pham Van Duong, a psychologist from the Department of Internal Medicine at Tam Anh General Hospital in Hanoi, the rate of men suffering from emotional and mental disorders is reported to be up to 60%. Inability to reproduce can cause feelings of shame, guilt, and lack of self-esteem, leading to varying degrees of depression, anxiety, and suffering, reducing the quality of life.

Unlike women, men are less concerned about psychological and mental health aspects because they are considered to be the stronger sex. They often do not proactively seek help from psychological experts. Prolonged treatment makes patients tired, lose confidence, avoid contact, and tend to isolate themselves.

In addition, prolonged stress and anxiety also contribute to infertility or make the disease worse, reducing the effectiveness of assisted reproductive treatment.

Research by Italian scientists published in the US National Library of Medicine shows that stress causes sperm concentration to decrease by 39% and motility to decrease by 48%.

Abnormalities in sexual and reproductive issues can easily cause men to lose their sexual desire, thereby reducing the chance of conception. Loss of confidence can cause patients to hesitate, delay examination, leading to infertility for many years, making treatment difficult, time-consuming and costly.

Some cases do not comply with the regimen or give up, affecting the successful conception results, increasing the financial burden. At Tam Anh IVF System, about 35% of infertile men coming for examination experience this condition.

Doctors advise that men should not smoke and use stimulants or drugs; limit alcohol consumption; eat a balanced diet; exercise regularly; avoid toxic environments, activities that increase testicular temperature or have the risk of causing genital trauma such as collisions, falls, etc.

In addition, taking time to rest, relax, and actively share with relatives or psychologists to relieve stress is also a measure to help ensure overall health and improve sperm quality and quantity.

Currently, with the development of medicine, updated regimens, modern methods and new drugs being introduced into treatment, most causes of male infertility can be cured. Patients can undergo in vitro fertilization even if the sperm count is very low. Even many men who have been sterile or infertile for many years still have the opportunity to become fathers with their own sperm.

According to statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), Vietnam is one of the countries with the highest infertility rate in the world. Most reproductive support centers currently focus on treating the wife, ignoring the husband's problems, reducing the effectiveness of treatment.
