According to the Russian Defense Ministry, early on the morning of June 27, the Russian military carried out a group attack on air bases in Ukraine, which were preparing to receive Western-made fighter jets.
The attack was carried out using “long-range precision weapons at sea, Kinzhal air-launched hypersonic missiles and drones,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.

Early in the morning, Ukrainian media also reported explosions in the Mykolaiv, Kherson, Dnipropetrovska and Khmelnytskyi regions.
The Ukrainian Air Force claimed that its air defenses shot down all 23 drones and five of the six missiles launched by the Russian military during the attack. However, no evidence has been provided to support these claims.
Ukraine is now preparing to receive the first of more than 80 US-made F-16 fighter jets promised by the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway and Belgium. France has also promised to provide Ukraine with a number of French-made Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets.
Last March, President Vladimir Putin declared that the Russian military would destroy Western-made fighter jets in Ukraine in the same way the Russian military destroyed Western-made tanks and other vehicles of Kiev's forces.
The Russian military resumed group attacks on military infrastructure and command posts in Ukraine last March in response to repeated attempts by the Kiev government to attack infrastructure in Russia.

The Kinzhal hypersonic missile is one of the most powerful weapons that Russia has. One of the highlights of the Kinzhal is that this missile has a hypersonic speed (over Mach 5), equivalent to 6,174 km/h. This incredible speed combined with high maneuverability makes the missile very difficult to intercept. This versatility allows this missile to be deployed for a variety of strategic purposes, from precision strikes on specific military targets to larger-scale destruction missions. The combination of the Kinzhal and the MiG-31K aircraft provides a long-range, rapid strike capability, enhancing the strategic reach of the Russian Air Force.
