The Russian Defense Ministry announced on Wednesday (October 9) that the Russian military has liberated two villages in the Kursk region.
Ukrainian forces were pushed back from Novaya Sorochina, 15km north of the town of Sudzha. Russian troops also recaptured Nikolsky, a small, densely populated Ukrainian-controlled area southwest of the Kursk region.
The Russian Defense Ministry also shared video footage from Nikolsky. The images show the assault groups entering the area in BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles.

The Russian Defense Ministry added that Ukrainian soldiers were pushed back from their positions and retreated in disarray.
In early August, Kiev launched an offensive in Russia’s Kursk region, seizing the town of Sudzha and several nearby villages. Ukrainian leader Zelensky said the operation was part of a “victory plan” aimed at strengthening Kiev’s position in potential negotiations with Moscow.
However, the Ukrainian offensive on Kursk lost momentum within days and the situation has been deadlocked for weeks. Since mid-September, the Russian army has launched counter-offensives and regained control of many towns and villages.
According to Russian estimates, 21,350 Ukrainian soldiers were killed and wounded and suffered heavy losses in equipment during the offensive. As many as 136 Ukrainian tanks, 66 infantry fighting vehicles, 98 armored personnel carriers and nearly 900 other armored vehicles were destroyed in the fighting in the Kursk region.
Also on October 9, the Russian Defense Ministry publicly disclosed information about a precision strike in the Dnipropetrovsk region of Ukraine. Accordingly, a precision strike by the Iskander-M missile complex destroyed a US-made Patriot launcher being used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

The Russian Iskander-M system has high precision and power. This system is often used by the Russian military to destroy important facilities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
The destruction of the Patriot systems is a major blow to the air defense capabilities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Patriot is considered one of the most modern and effective air defense systems used to counter missile attacks by the Russian military. Therefore, the loss of these systems will significantly weaken Ukraine's defense capabilities in the region.
Such attacks on key elements of military infrastructure could significantly slow down or completely paralyze the Ukrainian army's ability to conduct active combat operations, experts say.
Patriot is an air defense system from the Cold War era developed by the US Raytheon Corporation with the goal of creating a multi-purpose air defense weapon and a counterweight to the Soviet Union's S-300 air defense missile.
Patriot has undergone major upgrades with popular variants such as PAC-2 and PAC-3, of which the PAC-3 variant is famous for its ability to intercept short- and medium-range ballistic missiles of the enemy. Patriot has a range of 70km to 160km, capable of operating in all weather conditions with a flight ceiling of up to 24km.
