The groundbreaking ceremony was also held at the same time as the inauguration ceremony for the bridge over the Mekong River.

“With the participation of the private sector, we can finally connect Phnom Penh with Ho Chi Minh City and Bangkok. This connection requires not only roads, but also a large bridge,” he said.

The Phnom Penh - Bavet Expressway Project has a total length of 135.10km, starting from Thma Kor commune, Lvea Em district, Kandal province to Chrak M'tes commune, Bavet town, Svay Rieng province; the total investment is about 1.35 billion USD in the form of build - operate - transfer (BOT) investment for a period of 50 years.

China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) is the project's contractor. The project is expected to be completed after 48 months of construction.
