Many Google services have location tracking functionality on your phone.
Using Google apps
The Google app on your phone not only allows you to search the web, but can also be used to access and control all the data Google stores about you. Using the app, you can turn off location tracking and access a variety of other settings, including your location history.
- Open the Google app, tap your profile picture on the top right of the app.
- Tap Manage your account, then go to Data and privacy settings.
- Scroll down until you find the Location history setting and tap on it. Here find the option marked Turn off and tap on it.
- Users then have the option to clear both their history as well as change the settings to automatically delete after a set period of time.
With Google Maps app
In addition to using the Google app, users can also do it through Google Maps.
- Open the Google Maps app on your phone, tap your profile picture on the top right of the app.
- Tap on “your data in Maps”. Scroll down and tap on location history before tapping to turn off tracking.

Hide location from search
In addition to allowing Google to track physical location for navigation in Google Maps , users can also disable location tracking used in search by doing the following:
- Open the Google app, tap your profile picture on the top right of the app.
- Tap Settings, find "privacy and security", tap "precise location" before selecting "don't use" or "ask every time".
Note: This data is used for results in Google Search , Google Assistant , and Google Lens . Turning off this location tracking may mean the results you get from Google are less useful and less personalized, but it will give you peace of mind that your location isn't being tracked.
Delete timeline data from Google Maps
As well as deleting location data from Google Maps on your phone, users can also do it through their location history on desktop. When logged into a Google account in a browser, users can access a Google timeline to quickly see all the places they've been to around the world. Users can use this tool to drill down to specific locations or dates, then delete parts of their location tracking history.
- Open Google Timeline on your browser with your logged in account.
- At the bottom, click to see all your most visited locations or recent trips , by year, month, and date of the trip you want to delete.
- Alternatively, users can find a stop or location they've been to and tap the three-dot icon next to it before tapping "remove stop from day".
With camera app
When taking photos with the camera app on your phone, it can collect the user's location data. To be safe, users should turn it off to avoid having their location inserted into the photo they are taking.
The camera app on your phone can also track location.
To do this, first open the camera app on your phone, then tap the settings gear at the top of the screen and tap more settings. Here, find “save location” and turn it off.
