Promotion to stimulate shopping

The trend of being frugal with spending has formed due to the habit of tightening the purse strings of consumers. At the Cho Lon Tam Ky Electronics and Furniture Supermarket, Ms. Huynh Thanh Mai (Hoa Thuan Ward, Tam Ky) carefully researched the prices and quality of some brands of rice cookers. Realizing that the prices of the cookers at the supermarket were cheap thanks to promotions of up to 30%, she considered buying them.

“My income depends on the revenue from selling medicinal herbs to a local company. Sales did not meet the target, so I had to calculate very carefully before buying consumer goods,” said Ms. Mai.

According to Ms. Vu Thi Thanh Nga - Head of Tam Ky Market Management Board, consumers focused on buying essential foods. Household goods, garments, and electrical appliances tended to decrease sharply compared to the same period last year.

Ms. Dao Thi Ly - a shoe vendor at Tam Ky market said: "I hope consumer purchasing power will increase. It's the end of the year but sales are very slow."

Representatives of supermarkets, convenience stores, and mini supermarkets in Tam Ky City all said that consumer purchasing power at the end of this year is not as expected.

Retail systems have rearranged shelves to be neat, scientific, and more attractive to consumers. Currently, supermarkets have designed diverse and rich incentive programs, close to the actual needs of customers, in which priority is given to benefits for customer member groups.

Promote more efficient consumption

Mr. Le Vu Thuong - Director of the Department of Industry and Trade said that retail sales of goods in October reached 4,127 billion VND (accounting for 70.5% of total retail sales of goods and consumer service revenue). Revenue from the wood and construction materials group decreased sharply by 8.9%, while the fuel group decreased slightly by 1.2%.

In the first 10 months of 2024, total retail sales of goods and consumer service revenue reached VND 60,490 billion. Fortunately, there are some goods that have strong consumption such as gasoline, food, and foodstuff.

Notably, in the picture of shopping, retail, and consumption in Quang Nam in October and the first 10 months of the year, domestic consumption has not recovered well.

This reflects the difficulties of consumers when jobs and incomes are still affected by the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. When the economic recovery has not met expectations, people are still reluctant to spend and save, and do not dare to make large purchases.

To stimulate consumption, Mr. Le Vu Thuong said that the industry and trade sector will support localities, enterprises, and production and business establishments to build Vietnamese sales points called “Proud of Vietnamese goods”; mobilize and call on enterprises and establishments to bring Vietnamese goods to rural areas, especially highland, border, and island areas to create opportunities for people to widely purchase domestic goods.

Along with implementing national promotion programs, the provincial industry and trade sector enhances the role of trade promotion agencies, along with businesses and production facilities, to increase participation in year-end fairs and festivals, connecting trade, supply and demand of goods to stimulate consumption and sell more widely.

In particular, the provincial industry and trade sector established a trade promotion delegation in France, Belgium and the Netherlands; bringing OCOP products and rural industrial products of the province to participate in exhibitions, displays, promotions and export connections.

It is known that recently, the People's Committee of Thang Binh district requested the Economic - Infrastructure Department to promote consumption, focus on developing the domestic market, promote production, especially for OCOP products and rural industrial products.

In Hoi An City, the Economic Department encourages businesses and establishments to increase their production and business scale, prioritize promoting the distribution of goods via digital platforms, and call on consumers to widely respond to the campaign "Vietnamese people prioritize consuming Vietnamese goods" to clear the market for goods at the end of the year and during Tet.
