A monkey entered a transformer station in Sri Lanka, causing a nationwide power outage on February 9, according to officials.
The power outage began at around 11:30 a.m. on February 9 (Sri Lanka time), and power had not been fully restored after three hours, according to AFP.
"A monkey came into contact with our transformer, causing the system to become unbalanced," Sri Lankan Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody told reporters, adding that the monkey's intrusion into the substation occurred on the southern outskirts of the capital Colombo.
Traffic lights in the Sri Lankan city of Galle are not working after a power outage on February 9.
While power has been restored in some areas, it is unclear how long the outage will last. "Engineers are working to restore service as soon as possible," Jayakody said.
Immediately after the blackout, some Sri Lankans took to Reddit to find out what was going on. “Is the entire island without power?” one user posted on Reddit. Netizens were then able to quickly confirm that all of Colombo, the city of Galle, and several other areas were completely without power.
After the power outage, some netizens also highlighted related issues such as interrupted internet connections, possibly due to the towers not having electricity supply, and water shortages, possibly due to pumps or electric motors stopping working.
Others lamented Sri Lanka's frequent power outages, especially on weekends.
Sri Lankans endured months-long power outages in the summer of 2022 as the country plunged into an economic crisis. Fuel stations ran out of petrol and diesel, forcing thermal power plants to ration electricity for 13 hours a day, according to AFP.
