Indonesian immigration officials arrested a Russian woman named Luiza Kosykh at her villa in Bali on Wednesday after an old photo taken in 2021 resurfaced online.
Luiza Kosykh was arrested by immigration officials at her villa in Pererenan, Bali on Wednesday.
Denpasar Immigration Bureau chief Tedy Riyandi and Barron Ichsan, head of the Bali Immigration Office under the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, told local media on Thursday that Kosykh, who was in Bali on an investor visa, would be deported back to his home country.
Kosykh has apologized to authorities, saying she did not mean to disrespect the Balinese people when she took nude photos under the sacred Kayu Putih tree.
Previously, another Russian social media influencer named Alina Fazleeva was also deported after posing nude next to a 700-year-old sacred Kayu Putih tree and posting it online last year.
The incident caused an international stir and after a public backlash, Fazleeva deleted the image and posted an apology video. In the video, she is seen fully clothed and praying under a sacred tree, expressing her "regret".
The sacred Kayu Putih tree, also known as the Bayan ancient tree, is located behind a temple in Bayan village in the Tabanan district of Bali.
Kayu Putih means "white wood" in Bahasa Indonesia, is over 50m high and 700 years old, attracting many tourists to take pictures.
Several cases of tourists taking nude photos at sacred places in Bali have recently caused a stir in public opinion. On March 19, a young Russian man named Yuri posted a photo checking in at the sacred peak of Mount Agung. In the photo, he turned his back to the photographer, revealing his buttocks. Yuri later deleted the photo and apologized for his lack of understanding, but the Balinese people still asked the authorities to deport him.
In the first three months of the year, 620 foreigners were deported from Indonesia, according to Indonesia's immigration agency.
Violations include overstaying visas and residence permits, disturbing public order, misbehaving and failing to comply with Indonesian regulations.
