Billionaire Lee Shau Kee, once the richest man in Asia, passed away on March 17 at the age of 97.
The South China Morning Post has just reported that billionaire Lee Shau Kee, a wealthy real estate businessman in Hong Kong, has passed away. Real estate group Henderson Land announced that Mr. Lee passed away peacefully surrounded by his family.
Billionaire Lee Shau-kee held a press conference on May 28, 2019 after announcing his resignation.
Mr. Lee Shau Kee founded Henderson Land in 1976 and was chairman of the group until 2019, when he handed over the business to his two sons Peter (Lee Ka Kiet) and Martin (Lee Ka Shing).
At the time of his death, Mr. Lee was the second richest person in Hong Kong with a net worth of $30 billion, according to Forbes .
Mr. Lee was born in Guangdong Province, China. He was part of a generation of entrepreneurs who rose through property development in the 1960s and 1970s, when Hong Kong faced a shortage of affordable housing.
In 1996, Mr. Lee became the richest man in Asia with an estimated net worth of $12.7 billion. That year, he also became the fourth richest person in the world, behind billionaires Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and Paul Sacher.
In addition to running Henderson Land, Mr. Lee also devotes time to philanthropy. One of the projects he is most proud of is leading the Pei Hua Hong Kong Education Foundation, which he co-founded in 1982. Over the years, the charity has provided education and training programs that it says have benefited nearly 1.3 million people in mainland China.
Mr. Li has also donated more than 1 billion Hong Kong dollars ($128 million) and 600 million yuan ($83 million) to universities in Hong Kong and mainland China, according to Forbes .
