Phase 2 Gaza ceasefire negotiations begin

Yesterday, February 2, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu departed for the United States to meet with President Donald Trump and discuss important issues for Middle East peace.

Before boarding the plane, the leader said the discussion would include fighting Hamas and bringing all hostages in the Gaza Strip back home, according to The Times of Israel.

"The decisions we made during the war changed the face of the Middle East and I believe we can move towards a better future for the region by working closely with President Trump," Netanyahu said, noting that he was the first international leader to visit the White House after Trump took office.

The meeting between the two leaders will take place on February 4, but a day earlier, Netanyahu will work with US Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff to launch negotiations for phase two of the ceasefire. The deal began on January 19, with phase one lasting 42 days. During that time, Hamas must release 33 hostages in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. So far, 18 hostages have been released, and the next exchange is scheduled for this weekend. Fighting could resume if the sides do not reach an agreement before phase one ends in early March.

Negotiations for phase 2 are due to begin in Qatar today, February 3, but Israeli media reported that Prime Minister Netanyahu has instructed the negotiating delegation to wait until he meets with Mr. Trump before going to Qatar. Some Israeli media reported that Prime Minister Netanyahu is seriously considering resuming hostilities as demanded by far-right members of his ruling coalition instead of continuing with phase 2. In addition, Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer is said to be the head of the negotiating delegation instead of Mossad Director David Barnea. The Israeli Prime Minister's Office has denied these reports and affirmed that the decision on negotiations will only be made after Mr. Netanyahu returns from the US.

According to KAN, this visit to the US is also an opportunity for Mr. Netanyahu to promote the normalization of relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia, which was stopped due to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

In addition, Prime Minister Netanyahu said he would discuss with the US how to deal with Iran, Israel's main rival in the region. The Iranian military has recently conducted a series of massive military exercises and announced new military bases. AFP reported that the naval wing of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on February 1 unveiled an underground missile facility on the country's southern coast. Iranian commanders said the facility, located hundreds of meters underground, is equipped with missiles that can "create hell for enemy ships".
