Alarm about cyber security in Vietnam: 60% of businesses do not have strong enough security solutions

According to Bkav, up to 60% of businesses are not equipped with strong enough security solutions.
According to Bkav, up to 60% of businesses are not equipped with strong enough security solutions.

According to Bkav statistics, 155,640 computers in Vietnam have been attacked by ransomware, with total damage reaching tens of thousands of billions of VND. These losses include data ransom, lost revenue due to system downtime, lost customers and brand damage.

Several Vietnamese businesses have suffered heavy losses due to ransomware. One case lost more than VND100 billion on the first day of the attack, while another recorded losses of up to VND800 billion. Globally, cyberattacks are expected to cause losses of about USD9.5 trillion by 2024 (according to Cybersecurity Ventures).

Bkav said that the activities of malware are increasingly sophisticated and have clear attack strategies. Data encryption viruses often target businesses to extort huge ransoms, while targeted attack viruses (APT - Advanced Persistent Threat) spread silently, hiding in the systems of organizations to steal important information.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Thuy, Head of Malware Research at Bkav, warned that millions of new virus samples appear every day, causing terrible consequences. Worryingly, 60% of Vietnamese businesses do not have strong enough security solutions. Many businesses do not install anti-virus software or only use foreign software without specialized support from experts. Some companies even rely only on the basic anti-virus features available in the operating system, which are not capable of fighting today's sophisticated attacks.

Bkav cited the incident of the US cybersecurity company CrowdStrike, where a software error caused 8.5 million computers to malfunction. This incident shows that even large businesses need specialized security software, instead of just relying on available tools.

Experts warn that APT spyware and ransomware are hiding in many systems in Vietnam and can attack at any time. Therefore, businesses need to raise awareness of cyber security and deploy professional security solutions to prevent the risk of attack.
