In the context of increasing forest fires due to climate change, German company Dryad has developed an innovative technological solution to prevent and control forest fires.

A unique structure, resembling a giant golf ball with solar panels covering its exterior, is being used to house artificial intelligence (AI) drones, with the aim of detecting and extinguishing forest fires quickly and effectively.

Last week, Dryad unveiled an AI-powered drone that can detect wildfires by analyzing chemicals in the smoke from burning wood.

Sensors placed in the forest will detect these signals and send the information to the company's platform. Drones will be immediately deployed, flying above the canopy, using AI technology to determine the exact location and extent of the forest fire.

The information collected will help firefighters respond more quickly and effectively, thereby helping to prevent disasters.

Dryad's long-term goal is to send drones into the canopy and extinguish small fires using a groundbreaking technology - "sonic cannons."

This type of cannon fires low-frequency sound waves to extinguish fires without having to carry large amounts of water, making drones more flexible and effective.

Forest fires have been rare in the capital Berlin in the past, but during a severe heatwave in 2022, a large fire broke out in a forest west of the city, raising concerns about the growing risk of forest fires in Germany.

“Today’s wildfires are spreading faster and more intensely than ever before, which means we have to respond more quickly and effectively,” said Carsten Brinkschulte, CEO of Dryad.

Climate change has increased the conditions that lead to wildfires, such as high temperatures, droughts and strong winds. Experts say wildfires are now “nearly impossible to prevent,” making the development of prevention and response tools critical.

Dryad hopes to bring this drone technology to market by 2026. However, in order to operate commercially, the technology needs to be regulated and have the appropriate legal framework.
