Three times during a flight you should not call the flight attendant

VnExpressVnExpress14/05/2023

When the plane is moving on the runway, taking off and landing, passengers should not press the flight attendant call button for things that can be handled at any time.

Kat Kamalani, a former flight attendant, revealed three important moments during a flight when passengers should not press the flight attendant call button for assistance such as getting blankets, pillows, headphones or providing drinking water.

That's when the plane is taxiing, taking off, and landing. These are times when maximum safety is required and flight attendants must focus on their work. "We could get hurt, and so could you. If you use the call button, you could be ignored," Kamalani says.

In 2020, the American newspaper Business Insider published a study by the aircraft manufacturer Boeing. Accordingly, takeoff and landing are the two most dangerous moments in a flight. Boeing tracked fatal plane crashes around the world every year and classified those crashes at each time. The study divided the average 90-minute flight into 8 stages.

The taxiing, takeoff, and liftoff phase accounts for only 2% of the flight time, but accounts for 14% of the accidents. That may not seem like much, but when you consider the time the plane is in the air, which accounts for more than half of the flight time, and only 11% of the accidents, you can see how important a successful takeoff is. The landing phase accounts for only about 4% of the flight time, twice as long as the takeoff. But in this short period, 49% of the accidents occur. And landing is the most dangerous part of a flight.

"If you're going to press the call button at these three times, you shouldn't do it," Kamalani said. She also shared that pressing the button at these times drives many flight attendants "crazy."

The best time to press the flight attendant call button is when the plane has reached a stable altitude, the seat belt sign has turned off, and passengers are allowed to move around and use the restroom.

Kamalani also noted that in case of an emergency, at any time during the flight, passengers should press the button for assistance because "the crew is there to ensure the safety of the passengers". In addition, after pressing the call button, say thank you to the flight crew.
