Quang Dinh Hau - character in Hau's Wheel - received the 2022 Honored Character Award for Living Well

Looking forward to your support

Contacting Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong (81 years old), the inspirational character honored in the first season - 2021 in the article "People keeping the fire burning for the kitchen for nearly 30 years in the middle of Saigon" (author Nhat Linh), she said that the kitchen still distributes 100 servings every day from 9:30 am. "Although the situation has been much more difficult recently, we still try to maintain the operation of the charity kitchen of the Veterans Association of Ward 10, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City", Ms. Phuong said and confided: "There was a day when I went to the market because I didn't have enough money, so I had to buy on credit. The good thing is that everyone gave me a credit, then when a benefactor helped, I paid off the debt... I still often go to mobilize and ask for support in nearby areas such as Hoa Hung market, Vuon Chuoi market, Nguyen Thong market...".

Thicken the cultural value system

Six years ago, the Central Youth Union launched the campaign "One good news a day, one beautiful story a week" on social networks among young people nationwide. Since its launch, the campaign has attracted and spread millions of beautiful stories, shining examples in everyday life and especially examples of young people who are not afraid of difficulties and hardships, and are willing to contribute to the community. The Beautiful Living Contest of Thanh Nien Newspaper is one of the clear evidences for the effective implementation of the campaign.

Over the past 4 seasons, I am very happy that the number of entries each year has increased in both quantity and quality, and diversified in both form and content. The works have realistically portrayed shining examples in everyday life who do not fear difficulties and hardships, silently contributing and sharing love. Each work is a beautiful story, a shining example in everyday life, contributing to the enrichment of the national value system, cultural value system, family value system and moral standards of Vietnamese people. Those examples have spread noble human values.

Her voice dropped as she said that in the past few days, the news of the deaths of three people (who often came to receive free rice) had been continuously reported, making her very heartbroken. "Tet is coming, and we don't have much to help, other than rice and noodles - the food that the kitchen always needs. I have also asked for some to prepare Tet gifts for the Youth Volunteer Force without a regime. We still need everyone's help to hopefully keep the fire burning in this kitchen...".

I still remember in season 3, there was a very touching article that won first prize in the category of Reportage, memoir, and notes , also related to the charity kitchen. That was the kitchen that was carefully maintained by a family that, despite being extremely poor, still used the money they earned to open a vegetarian restaurant, sowing seeds of blessings, in the work The meteor has fallen, the fire is still burning (author Lu Khach). The character in that article - lay Buddhist Vu Quoc Cuong (deceased) was also honored in season 3. As the author wrote, because he had experienced all the sufferings of life, when the couple no longer had to work for every meal, Cuong decided to open a vegetarian charity restaurant to help people who were more disadvantaged than him. After he passed away due to Covid-19, his wife carried out her husband's last wish, trying to "keep the fire burning" at the vegetarian restaurant... But recently, when we asked about the kitchen, Mr. Cuong's wife said: "I recently stopped cooking because I couldn't afford it anymore. Currently, I only participate in volunteer activities according to my ability."

Also in season 3, a haunting and moving article - Doing charity, forgetting one's fate (author Ngoc Tan, won second prize in the category of Reportage, memoir, notes and the character in the article was also honored) made us unable to help but care about the next journey of the orphanage of Mr. Dinh Minh Nhat and his niece - teacher Dinh Thi Thuy Trang. For the past 19 years, orphans with no place to depend on, abandoned because of custom were brought up by Mr. Dinh Minh Nhat (village 1, Ia H'Lop commune, Chu Se district, Gia Lai); and recently, teacher Dinh Thi Thuy Trang, the niece who accepted to give up her entire career, sacrificing her youth, to take care of the orphanage when Mr. Nhat was seriously ill... Over the phone, Mr. Nhat said: "From the article in the Beautiful Life contest, many people know about the orphanage and there are some benefactors who have joined hands to support us, help us, and help us. For nearly 2 years now, the orphanage has expanded, the children have a more spacious place to live and work". He also happily announced that "the locality will soon proceed with the procedures to establish the orphanage of Chu Se district, not just ours. Through this, I would like to thank the Organizing Committee for giving us warm feelings, for the orphanage, for the children".

Kindness and beautiful living are everywhere

In the introduction to the book Loving Heart - Warm Hands (a collection of selected articles from Living Beautifully season 3), Editor-in-Chief of Thanh Nien Newspaper Nguyen Ngoc Toan wrote: "I remember, at the exchange meeting of the launching ceremony of Living Beautifully season 3, many young people expressed their concerns that living beautifully is still misunderstood, does living beautifully need to be recognized or is living beautifully to polish oneself? Surely this is also the question of many people, about the two words "living beautifully" in today's skeptical society. But at that time, the guest - writer Anh Khang answered, looking at the image of the Living Beautiful logo made him think of water lilies, lotus flowers - flowers that bloom from swamps or in other words, the purest, most fragrant lotus flower crystallized from dirty mud... And Anh Khang sent a message to young people that, if our heart is a lotus flower, don't worry about the dirty mud outside".

Among the thousands of entries that the Organizing Committee of Living Beautifully received in past seasons, there were many articles in which the authors mentioned their doubts about the projects, organizations, and volunteer activities of the characters they wanted to convey. But then, with the persuasion of the writers, and perhaps with the thought "if our heart is a lotus flower, don't worry about the mud outside", stories of living beautifully from all over the world continued to be shared, sent back, and fueled. Today, Living Beautifully has entered its 5th season, with the theme The Miracle of Kindness .

As the author who won first prize in season 2 of Living Beautifully , category of Reportage, memoir, notes (with the article Hau's Wheel , about the character Quang Dinh Hau in Quang Ngai - a person who does charity with his own disabled body), Vo Minh Huy said: "After 4 seasons of competition, there have been countless beautiful stories woven from kind people in life, from countless kind hearts and then spread, touching millions of hearts through the "bridge" of Living Beautifully that Thanh Nien Newspaper has persistently and determinedly maintained. That is the story of the character En Nho (real name: Huynh Thanh Thao) who "touched" readers with her perseverance and efforts to live not only for herself but also for others.

Or works whose names alone are full of humanity, such as: The old farmers "measure hearts", "The Dark Knight" in Thu Dau Mot or The veteran with the "giant" children in season 4 recently...".

The 2022 contest - season 2 has 705 entries, according to Minh Huy, all the entries are good and touching. And he won first prize not because he wrote well but because of the character in the work - Quang Dinh Hau, who is disabled but begs for money to help the poor and sick. Minh Huy said that nowadays, he still occasionally sees Hau standing at intersections holding donation boxes to do charity work himself. "A few days ago, the boy texted me again: "This Tet, can you come with me to give gifts to the poor?". That's it, kindness and living beautifully are everywhere. And it is these beautiful real-life stories that help us to see ourselves and live more beautifully," Minh Huy said.
