Most people can safely eat lemons or drink lemon juice, but because lemons are acidic, they pose a risk of harm in certain situations. So who should limit their lemon intake?

1. People with gastroesophageal reflux disease should be careful when eating lemons.

Lemons are packed with beneficial nutrients, especially vitamin C. This citrus fruit can help boost your immune system and reduce your risk of certain health conditions. Adding lemons to your dishes or drinking lemon water are popular ways to eat lemons. However, people with acid reflux should be cautious when eating lemons as they can worsen their symptoms.

People with gastroesophageal reflux should limit their intake of lemons because lemons are highly acidic and can increase the amount of acid in the stomach. When the amount of acid in the stomach increases, it refluxes into the esophagus, causing uncomfortable symptoms such as heartburn, acid reflux, and chest pain.

The acid in lemons irritates and damages the lining of the esophagus that is already inflamed from reflux. This can worsen symptoms and slow healing.

However, the degree of effect of eating lemon varies from person to person. People with severe symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux should avoid eating lemons and other acidic foods, but people with milder symptoms can consume small amounts of diluted lemon without any problems.

2. People with stomach ulcers are prone to increased pain when eating lemon on an empty stomach.

In people with stomach ulcers, eating lemons can increase pain and discomfort so caution should be exercised when consuming lemons. Lemons stimulate the production of stomach acid, which aggravates ulcers. Excess acid causes a burning sensation and discomfort in the epigastric region.

The patient's stomach lining is often damaged and the high acid content in lemon can irritate the pain, especially on an empty stomach, and slow down the healing process of ulcers.

Therefore, people with stomach problems should absolutely not eat lemons or drink lemon juice on an empty stomach because it erodes the stomach lining, making the pain worse. The best time to drink lemon juice is about 30 minutes after a full meal. Do not drink concentrated lemon juice, but dilute it with plenty of warm water before drinking to reduce the acid concentration.

3. People with damaged tooth enamel should limit eating lemons.

Because of its high acidity, lemons can easily erode tooth enamel, especially when the enamel is already damaged. Eroded enamel will expose the dentin underneath, causing tooth sensitivity and pain when eating sour, hot, or cold foods. The acid in lemons also stimulates the nerves in the dentin, causing uncomfortable pain.

According to Dr. Le Thuc Trinh, a specialist in Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery at Military Hospital 354, because lemon juice is acidic, it has a certain impact on teeth. Continuous contact with acid will erode tooth enamel. A feeling of tooth sensitivity can be a warning sign that high acid concentrations are harmful to teeth. Therefore, to protect tooth enamel, you should cut down on acidic foods and drinks like lemon.

4. The safest way to eat lemon

Everyone reacts differently to lemons, especially those who are sensitive to acidity. Therefore, if you feel uncomfortable when eating lemons, stop eating them. You should not eat lemons on an empty stomach.

When using lemon to prepare dishes, you should use a moderate amount, do not squeeze too much lemon juice into the dish.

Although drinking lemon water has the benefit of cooling, providing a lot of vitamin C and citric acid to help reduce fatigue, you should not drink too much and should not add too much sugar. The ratio of half a lemon to a glass of water and a little sugar is often effective without being too sour. Using warm water will be gentler on the stomach and aid digestion.

To protect tooth enamel, when drinking lemon juice, use a straw to reduce direct contact of lemon juice with teeth. Rinse your mouth with water and do not brush your teeth after drinking lemon juice. This will allow saliva time to wash away the acid naturally and help harden tooth enamel because saliva is the mouth's natural defense against acid, helping to neutralize acid and remineralize tooth enamel.
