China Determined to go to university, Liang Shi, 56 years old, took the exam 27 times over a period of 40 years.
Liang took his first college entrance exam in 1983 but failed. The Sichuan native tried again two years later but was unsuccessful. In 1986, his parents convinced him to enroll in a technical college, but he dropped out after just a year, saying he didn’t want to work next to noisy machines.
Liang then went to work and studied by himself to take the exam.

In 1991, Liang worked in a wood factory and got married, but he still dreamed of going to college. In 1992, he took the separate college entrance exam for adults due to age restrictions and was admitted to Nanjing Forestry University. However, Liang did not like it and did not enroll.
To support his family, Liang sold clothes, refrigerators and televisions. He then opened a building materials factory and earned one million yuan in less than a year.
In 2001, the Chinese Ministry of Education removed the age limit for university entrance exams, and Liang decided to retake the exam. Due to work commitments, Liang was only able to take the exam in 2002 and 2006. Since 2010, Liang has taken the exam every year.
In 2011, Liang took the exam with his son. He failed, and his son has now graduated with a master's degree.
Liang's highest score was 469/750 in 2018. In 2019, he also scored 462 points but did not apply to any school because his goal was Sichuan University, a top university, in the top 20 in China.
Liang’s efforts to pass the exam received mixed reactions. While some people encouraged him and praised his perseverance, many said he was wasting his time and energy. But he was not discouraged.
"Everyone has a different goal to pursue. You can't say who is right and who is wrong. As long as the law allows it, it is reasonable," Liang said.
To prepare for this year's exam, Liang left home at 8am every day, took the subway to a friend's tea shop to study, and returned at 9-10pm. Liang took a nap at noon on a bench at the shop.
At this age, Liang admits that it is difficult to wake up early. He wants to realize his dream as soon as possible, so he no longer sets his goal of entering Sichuan University.
"A key university is fine. If I have enough points, I will attend," Liang said.
