China's college entrance exam (Gaokao) is considered one of the most competitive exams in the world. Getting a score just enough to get into university is difficult enough, and few candidates dream of getting a perfect score on this exam.
However, Ha Bich Ngoc (born in 1985) did it. She shocked the media by achieving a perfect score of 750. This is special because before Bich Ngoc, no one had done this.
750/750 - A score never seen before in history
Born into a family with a tradition of learning in Henan, China, Bich Ngoc had access to many books and knowledge since childhood.
When her peers were still learning to speak, Bich Ngoc had memorized some poems. Her parents always believed in letting their children learn and develop naturally, not restricting them within four walls. Therefore, from the age of 3, Bich Ngoc was taken by her parents to visit many places and acquire knowledge through real-life experiences. This helped her develop her intelligence and imagination.
Besides learning knowledge, Bich Ngoc focused on practicing many skills such as dancing and singing. Thanks to being nurtured in many aspects, she became an excellent child, surpassing her classmates.
At the age of 10, Bich Ngoc passed the entrance exam to Tan Huong High School No. 1 in Ha Nam province, a school reserved for students with extraordinary abilities. Despite her young age, she scored enough points to enter the prodigy class.
In 1999, Ha Bich Ngoc registered for the university entrance exam for the first time. The female student eagerly took the entrance exam to the junior class of the University of Science and Technology of China but was not lucky.
Not giving up, a year later, she was determined to retake the exam. This time, Bich Ngoc surprised the whole country by achieving a perfect score of 750, the highest ever in China. This score brought Bich Ngoc to the prestigious Tsinghua University.
Controversial decision
After graduating from Tsinghua University, Bich Ngoc was retained to continue her studies and research with extremely attractive policies. However, the girl from Ha Nam wanted to study abroad to explore new fields.
At the age of 18, Bich Ngoc went to Washington University (USA) to study for a master's degree. The Chinese girl gradually conquered prestigious degrees. After receiving her PhD, Bich Ngoc did not return to her country. This caused a stir in Chinese public opinion.
When Bich Ngoc announced that she would continue to stay in the US to do scientific research, many people "dug up" an interview from her university days. She once said that she wanted to go abroad to study a new major so that in the future she could serve and contribute more to the country.
Because of that promise, the Chinese people thought that after completing her master's degree, she would return to work in her home country. Unexpectedly, after many years of studying abroad, Bich Ngoc changed her decision, leaving many people disappointed.
In 2016, Bich Ngoc became an assistant professor at New York University School of Medicine. The story of the child prodigy became a debate on social networks.
In addition to the criticism, many people have spoken out to defend her. They believe that there is nothing wrong with pursuing her passion, and that Bich Ngoc staying in the US for the sake of studying is justified because the desire to improve knowledge is not a sin that should be condemned. Some people commented that Bich Ngoc's contribution to the common development of the world can also be considered her contribution to China.
