Bloody ejaculation warns of many diseases

VnExpressVnExpress22/05/2023

Blood in semen can be a warning sign of benign diseases that will heal on their own or malignant diseases that need early treatment.

Sperm is produced in the testicles and nourished in the epididymis. During intercourse, the muscles contract and push the sperm out. Along the way, the sperm receives some substances from the seminal vesicles and prostate gland before being released from the urethra. Therefore, if any location along the vas deferens bleeds, it can cause hematospermia. At this time, the semen may appear red, pink, brown or rust-colored. In some cases, the amount of blood in the semen is so small that it can only be detected through testing.

Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Tan, Department of Urology and Andrology, Tam Anh General Hospital, Hanoi, said that bloody ejaculation can be a sign of benign lesions occurring in the seminal vesicles or vas deferens. Usually, with these lesions, the phenomenon of bloody ejaculation will not last long, and will not be accompanied by other abnormal symptoms. This condition tends to heal on its own but is prone to recurrence.

However, if accompanied by symptoms such as pain, this will be a warning sign of diseases that need early treatment such as:

Inflammation and infection : Inflammation is one of the most common causes of hematospermia. Inflammation irritates the mucous membranes, leading to congestion and edema of the ducts, glands of the vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate, testicles, and urethra, thereby causing blood to mix in the semen. Infection, trauma, seminal vesicle stones, or prostate calcification are common causes of inflammation.

Blocked seminal vesicles, seminal vesicle cysts: When the seminal vesicles are stretched and dilated for a long time due to any cause, it will rupture the blood vessels under the mucosa, leading to the phenomenon of bloody ejaculation.

Cancer : Patients with prostate cancer, vas deferens cancer, testicular cancer, lymphoma... have a high risk of bloody ejaculation.

Systemic diseases such as blood clotting disorders, hemophilia, cirrhosis and hypertension... can also lead to bloody ejaculation.

In addition, hematospermia can also occur after men perform locally invasive procedures such as: transrectal prostate biopsy, urethral instrumentation, radiation for prostate cancer, orchiectomy, vasectomy...

If this condition is not treated promptly, it can lead to many serious consequences, not only causing anxiety and confusion for men, but in the long term, it can also reduce desire, apathy, and affect the relationship between husband and wife. In addition, persistent bloody ejaculation will reduce the quantity and quality of sperm, making it difficult to conceive, increasing the risk of infertility. Some other cases can be warning signs of cancer, including: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, cancer of the vas deferens... Therefore, Dr. Ngoc Tan recommends that when men have bloody ejaculation, they should quickly go to the doctor for treatment as soon as possible, preventing dangerous complications.
