Seafood exports reach target of 11 billion USD

2024 is the second time seafood exports have reached the 10 billion USD mark, of which shrimp will bring in 4 billion USD, pangasius 2 billion USD, and tuna 1 billion USD. In 2025, the seafood industry is aiming to reach 11 billion USD.

At the celebration of seafood exports reaching 10 billion USD by the Association of Seafood Processors and Exporters seafood Vietnam (VASEP) held on the evening of December 23, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien said that it is expected that our country's agricultural, forestry and fishery exports this year will reach a new record of 62 billion USD, including contributions from the fishery sector.

According to Mr. Tien, 2024 is a year of many challenges, conflicts and political instability in a number of countries and regions around the world, leading to high inflation, increased unemployment, economic instability in many countries, and the impact of market barriers greatly affecting Vietnam's seafood exports.

Besides, environmental difficulties, epidemics, natural disasters in general, especially storm Yagi (storm No. 3) have caused great damage to the fisheries industry.

However, the entire seafood industry has overcome, maintaining growth and export turnover.

In 2024, the country's seafood exports will reach the target of about 10 billion USD, an increase of nearly 13% compared to 2023. This is the second time the seafood export industry has reached 10 billion USD.

Shrimp is still the main export item, bringing in 4 billion USD (up 17%), followed by pangasius reaching 2 billion USD and tuna also bringing in 1 billion USD...

According to Mr. Tien, 2025 will continue to pose new challenges for the seafood industry, in which resolving the IUU yellow card, adapting to climate change, environmental pollution and market barriers will be important goals.

"With determination and creativity, the Vietnamese seafood industry will surpass the 10 billion USD mark in 2025 and move towards the target of 11 billion USD, in the context of improved raw material sources and expanded export markets. In particular, improving product quality and improving the reputation of businesses will help us increase market share and affirm the position of Vietnamese seafood in the international market..." - Mr. Tien said.

To achieve this goal, Mr. Tien proposed promoting links between units participating in the production chain to improve quality, ensure traceability, and continue to increase the proportion of value-added export items.

For expanding export markets, in addition to the In the US, China, Japan and EU markets, we need to focus on developing the export of seafood products to Halal and Middle Eastern markets.

Mr. Tien also affirmed that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is determined to remove inappropriate regulations, creating maximum favorable conditions for production and export enterprises.
