Suspected poisoning incident at Song Cam Shipyard kitchen: Request to clarify the cause

Regarding the poisoning incident that caused 127 workers to be hospitalized, the Ministry of Health requested the immediate suspension of the Song Cam Shipyard's collective kitchen, investigation to determine the cause of the poisoning, and trace the origin of the food.

According to the Department of Food Safety (Ministry of Health), immediately after receiving a report on the suspected food poisoning incident at Song Cam Shipyard (Hai Phong) that infected 178 people, of whom 127 had to be hospitalized for treatment, on June 27, the Department sent an official dispatch to the Hai Phong Department of Health, requesting urgent direction to hospitals with patients being treated, to focus resources to actively treat food poisoning patients so as not to affect their health and lives.

If necessary, you can request professional consultation support from a higher level hospital.

At the same time, it is recommended to immediately suspend the operation of the Song Cam Shipyard's collective kitchen, organize an investigation to determine the cause of the poisoning according to regulations, trace the origin of the food, take food samples and specimens for testing to find the cause.

The Food Safety Department recommends detecting and strictly handling violations of food safety regulations (if any) and publicizing the results to promptly warn the community.

Hai Phong Department of Health strengthens propaganda and guidance for collective kitchens and food service establishments to ensure hygiene and food safety conditions, strictly implement the management of food ingredients' origin, three-step food inspection, food sample storage and hygiene in processing stages.

In addition, the Department propagates and educates people about food safety knowledge and measures to prevent and combat food poisoning, in order to raise awareness, change behaviors and habits that do not ensure food safety in choosing and using food, do not use food of unknown origin, label, or source; strictly implement the contents of Official Dispatch No. 2487/BYT-ATTP dated May 11, 2024 of the Ministry of Health on preventing and handling food poisoning; report implementation results to the Department of Food Safety according to regulations.

Hai Phong Department of Health said that 178 workers of Song Cam Company showed symptoms of poisoning. Of these, 69 workers were treated at Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital, 30 workers at International General Hospital, 28 workers at An Duong District Medical Center and 51 workers with mild symptoms were being monitored at the company.

According to initial information, the June 27 lunch had 802 servings and started serving at 11:30 with two menus for workers and company staff to choose from.

Menu 1 includes chicken cooked with starling, peanuts with fried oil, boiled squash, spinach soup, white rice, and watermelon. Menu 2 includes braised sea fish, grilled lolot leaves, boiled squash, spinach soup, white rice, and watermelon.

After finishing lunch for 30 minutes, the workers rested. At around 1 pm, the Labor Safety Department urgently reported that many workers showed signs of poisoning, with hot faces, headaches, chest pain, difficulty breathing, rashes, and nausea...

Immediately after receiving the information, the company immediately contacted the An Duong District Medical Center (where the company operates) for emergency support.

The company arranged vehicles to transport more than one hundred workers to An Duong Medical Center, Thuy Nguyen Medical Center, International General Hospital, and Viet Tiep Hospital.

Workers with mild symptoms were taken to the company's break room and treated on the spot by medical staff at An Duong Medical Center. By 2:30 p.m. the same day, these workers were conscious and returned to work as usual./.
