On November 2, Thong Nhat Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, organized the 8th Open Geriatric Conference .

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Kim Tien - former Minister of Health, President of the Vietnam Organ Donation Campaign Association - said that Vietnam is currently leading Southeast Asian countries in organ transplants (over 1,000 cases per year), we have mastered all organ transplant techniques.

"In 2024, in Vietnam, the source of organs from brain-dead people will double. The Vietnamese medical sector is making efforts to increase the number of organ donations from brain-dead people in many different ways.

In particular, establishing branches to promote human tissue and organ donation in hospitals is an important factor," Associate Professor Kim Tien said.

Mr. Dong Van He - Director of the National Organ Donation and Transplant Coordination Center - shared that up to now, the country has 29 hospitals that can perform organ transplants, performing over 1,000 transplants each year, leading the Southeast Asian countries. By 2024, 10% of organs will be donated from brain-dead people. However, this rate is still very low, the medical industry still pays little attention to organ donation from brain-dead people. The rate of doctors and nurses who correctly understand organ donation from brain-dead people is only over 10%.

According to Mr. He, the oldest cornea donor in the world is 107 years old, and the oldest organ donor is 92 years old.

In 2023 alone, in the US, 40% of organ donors will be over 50 years old. In the world, 1 in 4 people who receive an organ transplant is 65 years old. Therefore, people of advanced age can still participate in organ donation and transplantation.

Mr. He said that organ transplants from deceased people require coordination from many hospitals and medical facilities, so there needs to be a network and system, with many hospitals working together.

Currently, the source of organs from brain-dead people is still limited. In 2023, up to 94% of donated organs will come from living people, while brain-dead people will only account for about 6%, while internationally it is 50-90%.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Kim Tien gave an example, in the world the highest is Spain with 50 brain-dead organ donors per 1 million people saving many lives, or in the United States, organ donors have successfully saved 42,000 lives each year.

Thong Nhat Hospital deploys additional liver transplant techniques

Associate Professor Le Dinh Thanh - Director of Thong Nhat Hospital said that in recent years, the hospital has achieved many remarkable achievements in the field of science and medical technology development. With the support of technology transfer from experts of Cho Ray Hospital, Thong Nhat Hospital has successfully performed many kidney transplants (15 cases), helping to bring new hope to many patients. "We are preparing for liver transplants, with the support and transfer support from the 108 Military Central Hospital", Associate Professor Thanh said. On the same day, Thong Nhat Hospital also launched the Organ Donation Promotion Association, an important initiative in developing organ transplant activities, opening up many life-saving opportunities for patients in need.
