Vietnam bans laughing gas from today

From January 1, 2025, Vietnam officially banned the production, trading, import, transportation, storage and use of laughing gas.

This decision was made in the context that laughing gas - a product containing N2O (dinitrogen oxide) gas - is increasingly becoming a danger to public health, especially among young people.

The Ministry of Health affirms that the abuse of laughing gas will cause unpredictable harm to public health, especially among teenagers.

Laughing gas is known as a "fun" that attracts many people to experience the feeling of excitement and refreshment. However, the consequences of abusing laughing gas are not something to be taken lightly.

Laughing gas is commonly used in bars, nightclubs, coffee shops, and even on the sidewalk. This type of product is often sold in crowded gatherings, especially among young people. However, the dangerous effects of laughing gas have long been warned by health experts.

A worrying case is patient NMN (23 years old, Hanoi) who was recently admitted to Medlatec Thanh Xuan General Clinic. The patient came to the clinic with numbness in the limbs, tingling sensation in the extremities, difficulty in movement, headache, prolonged insomnia, anxiety and rapid heartbeat. It is known that the patient had been using laughing gas continuously for a year, with a frequency of about 3 times/week.

After performing tests and diagnosis, the doctor determined that the patient had nerve damage due to N2O gas poisoning. Specifically, the MRI image showed that the patient had cervical disc degeneration and peripheral polyneuropathy.

MSc. Dr. Nguyen Thi Huyen Thu, a neurologist at Medlatec Thanh Xuan General Clinic, said that when N2O gas poisoning occurs, neurological complications are the first to appear, causing symptoms such as numbness in the limbs. If this condition persists without timely treatment, the damage may be irreversible.

When inhaled, N2O gas in laughing balloons has a strong effect on the central nervous system, bringing a temporary feeling of happiness and excitement. However, the long-term effects of abusing N2O gas are very dangerous.

According to experts, laughing gas abuse can lead to serious neurological problems, including neurological disorders, seizures, depression, sensory disturbances and motor paralysis. These complications can become more severe over time and have long-term effects on the user's health.

In addition to its effects on the nervous system, N2O gas can also cause poisoning, leading to a lack of oxygen in the blood, adversely affecting other organs such as the heart and brain. Laughing gas also causes negative impacts on social life, especially when used in entertainment venues and crowded gatherings.

Doctors and medical experts advise young people not to use laughing gas, while emphasizing that a healthy lifestyle is an important factor in protecting health.
