These days, visiting Binh Lieu, you'll easily spot patches of forest bustling with people harvesting cinnamon. During the 2025 spring cinnamon harvest season, in Huc Dong commune, the area with the largest cinnamon plantations in Binh Lieu district, people are busy harvesting. From the end of March until now, Mr. Ly Van Chinh's family in Khe Mo village, Huc Dong commune, has regularly hired 10-15 workers to harvest cinnamon in the Thong Chau area. The entire cinnamon plantation, which he planted in 2009, is now in the harvesting stage.
Mr. Ly Van Chinh said: "With over 1 hectare of cinnamon trees, we harvest an average of 2 tons of bark per day. Today is the 5th day of harvesting cinnamon, so my family has harvested about 10 tons this year. After deducting expenses, we earned 200 million VND. After harvesting the cinnamon, my family will start planting the new forest crop to keep up with the season."
Forest planting and forest-based economic development are strengths that provide jobs and income for people in the mountainous areas of Binh Lieu. According to statistics from the Binh Lieu District Department of Agriculture and Environment, the district currently has 690 hectares of cinnamon plantations in 7 communes, with Huc Dong commune having the largest area at over 412 hectares. During the annual cinnamon harvest season, not only are the cinnamon trees in the forests busy with harvesting, but the collection points run by local households are equally bustling. The harvested cinnamon is transported by households to these collection points for sale. The cinnamon sticks are then sorted, peeled, and dried. The cinnamon scraps are processed and then dried. In total, local households utilize almost all of the harvested cinnamon.
The development of forestry-based economic activities has helped people in Binh Lieu district develop their household economies and increase their incomes. By the end of 2024, the average per capita income in the district had reached 75.5 million VND/person/year. The district aims to encourage people to continue diversifying economic development models and applying scientific and technological advancements to continuously increase their incomes, striving to achieve the status of an advanced new rural district by the end of this year, with the average per capita income reaching 100 million VND/person/year.
