Removing giant ovarian tumor from 18 year old female student

NDO - A "giant" ovarian tumor measuring 35x35cm, containing 6 liters of mucus, caused an 18-year-old female student to suffer a lot of pain for a while. This is a rare case, requiring early intervention and precise surgical techniques to ensure safety and optimal recovery for the patient.

The patient was admitted to the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital on March 24 with symptoms of dull pain in the lower abdomen, rapidly enlarging abdomen, and a feeling of uncomfortable pressure. Through clinical examination and abdominal ultrasound, the doctor determined a left ovarian tumor measuring up to 35x35 cm, containing about 6 liters of mucus, adhering to the left fallopian tube and occupying almost the entire abdominal cavity.

After a specialist consultation, the patient was scheduled for early surgery. Due to the risk of the tumor continuing to grow or causing complications such as torsion, rupture or organ compression, the patient was scheduled for open surgery on March 25.

The surgery was performed in the hospital's operating room, in the form of open surgery. The surgeon performing the surgery was Dr. Do Xuan Hai, Specialist II, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

During surgery, doctors noted that the left ovarian tumor occupied the entire abdominal cavity, attached to the left fallopian tube, and the fluid in the tumor was about 6 liters, thick and mucous.

The doctor performed a total excision of the left adnexa (ovary and fallopian tube) to completely remove the tumor, avoid complications and prevent recurrence.

The surgery went smoothly, the tumor was completely removed, without causing damage to nearby organs or significant blood loss. The patient was alert immediately after surgery, his abdomen was clearly flattened, and he recovered steadily.

Doctors advise that adnexal tumors in young people can progress silently, without obvious symptoms. When detected, they are often large, causing compression or risk of complications.

Successful surgery in this case not only helped the patient get rid of prolonged discomfort but also contributed to protecting long-term reproductive health. Even if there are no obvious symptoms, women - especially of reproductive age - should maintain the habit of regular gynecological examination every 6-12 months.
