Indulging in the hobby of smoking laughing gas for a year, a 23-year-old man suffered from numbness in his limbs, difficulty moving and holding objects, headaches, and insomnia.
Laughing gas can help reduce stress, bring excitement and hearty laughter, but Medlatec experts warn that young people may have to pay a high price because of the unpredictable health consequences caused by this hobby.
Laughing gas contains many dangers to the user's health. |
Laughing gas inhalation - A pastime that is popular among a large number of young people today because of the strange, exciting feelings it brings. However, despite warnings about the harmful health risks of this pastime, many young people still abuse it.
Recently, Medlatec Thanh Xuan General Clinic received a patient NMN (23 years old, Hanoi) who came for examination with numbness in the limbs, tingling sensation in the extremities, difficulty in moving and holding objects, headache, prolonged insomnia, anxiety, and rapid heartbeat for 1 month. It is known that the patient has a habit of using laughing gas continuously for 1 year, about 3 times/week.
At the Clinic, patients are examined by a Neurologist and undergo necessary tests and imaging diagnostics.
Magnetic resonance imaging of the neck showed cervical disc degeneration and peripheral polyneuropathy. The doctor concluded that the cause of the patient's numbness in all four limbs was due to prolonged use of laughing gas, a consequence of N2O gas poisoning leading to nerve damage.
MSc. Dr. Nguyen Thi Huyen Thu, Neurology specialist, Medlatec Thanh Xuan General Clinic said that laughing gas contains N2O. When poisoned by N2O gas, neurological complications appear first, then affect other organs. The initial feeling that the patient can clearly feel is numbness in the limbs.
With nerve damage that appears after 6 months, there is no possibility of recovery. In this case, fortunately, the symptoms only appeared 1 month ago, so the patient still has a chance of recovery if he complies with treatment.
Nowadays, restaurants, bars, cafes, and even some sidewalk cafes also provide laughing gas, attracting many young people to use it. Young people consider laughing gas a trendy hobby and are increasingly abusing it.
Laughing balloons are balloons filled with N2O gas. When inhaled, this gas has the ability to strongly affect a point in the nervous system, creating a feeling of excitement for the body, causing laughter and refreshment for the user.
According to the Ministry of Health, Nitrous Oxide gas (chemical formula N2O) is a chemical widely used in many fields such as industry (production of solar cells, use in welding/cutting techniques for machines, increasing engine capacity...); medicine (anesthesia, sedation, pain relief...); food (fermented milk, cream, pasta, noodles... complying with the regulations of the Codex Alimentarius Commission).
According to the Ministry of Health, according to reports from some localities, there has been a situation of buying and using laughing gas containing N2O gas at bars, dance clubs, karaoke bars, entertainment areas, etc., which adversely affects the health of users and also causes negative impacts on social life.
MSc. Nguyen Thi Huyen Thu pointed out the dangerous effects of this pastime on health. Abuse of N2O can lead to neurological disorders such as convulsions, loss of control, depression, sensory disturbances, motor paralysis, sleep disorders, damage to the central nervous system... Even when used at low concentrations, users can suffer from reduced cognition, vision and hearing.
Medlatec doctors recommend that people, especially teenagers, should not use laughing gas because of the dangerous complications that can affect their health. At the same time, young people need to maintain a healthy lifestyle, exercise, eat and live in moderation, and have regular health check-ups to build a happy and healthy life.
To ensure health, as well as security and safety for society, the Ministry of Health has requested localities to closely monitor and manage the production, trading, import and use of N2O in accordance with the law.
