Deputy Minister Hoang Dao Cuong received Mr. Vongthep Arthakaivalvatee, Senior Advisor of the Sports Alliance
Thanking Deputy Minister Hoang Dao Cuong and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for the welcome, Mr. Vongthep Arthakaivalvatee affirmed that Vietnam plays a very important role in sustainable development and community building.
The representative of the Sports in Criminal Justice Alliance said that in Southeast Asia, ASEAN member states have recognized the role of sports in social development and crime prevention. Thailand’s initiative – Mainstreaming Sports in Youth Crime Prevention and Building Social Resilience – is aligned with the first priority area of the ASEAN Plan of Action on Sports 2021-2025, which highlights the role of sports in promoting peace and development. This initiative reflects the commitment made at the ASEAN Sports Ministers Meeting and previous High-Level Meetings.
Building on this momentum, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the French Development Agency (AFD), together with a coalition led by the Sport in Criminal Justice Alliance, are launching the Southeast Asia Youth Crime Prevention and Sport Initiative.
This initiative contributes to the IOC's Olympism365 strategy and AFD's mission of using sport as a tool to promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), supporting the transition to a more equitable and sustainable world.
Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Dao Cuong presented a souvenir to Mr. Vongthep Arthakaivalvatee
Mr. Vongthep Arthakaivalvatee added that this initiative leverages the power of sport to reduce youth crime and violence based on strengthening cross-sectoral cooperation; investing in community projects in Laos, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, supporting training, learning and knowledge exchange across the region.
"The four countries were selected for their regional influence, strong presence of civil society and recognition of the role of sports in social development. We look forward to receiving strong support from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as well as related ministries. With the support of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, we will be more confident. To develop the upcoming project, we can organize online as well as in-person meetings," said Mr. Vongthep Arthakaivalvatee.
In addition, Mr. Vongthep Arthakaivalvatee also proposed establishing a national steering committee to promote this initiative to enhance the capacity of youth and young people to develop sports movements, hoping that the ministry would support it, and at the same time hoping that Vietnam would allow the above initiative to be included in the program at the 8th ASEAN Sports Ministers Meeting to be held in Vietnam this coming October.
Responding to Mr. Vongthep Arthakaivalvatee's request, Deputy Minister Hoang Dao Cuong affirmed that through the working session, the necessity of sports in bringing a healthy life to young people has been proven, limiting and preventing activities to the maximum extent.
The Deputy Minister expressed his belief that the activities of the Sports Alliance in Criminal Justice will make great contributions to preventing juvenile crime.
"The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism fully agrees, supports and facilitates the highest level of coordination for the project. We will direct relevant units to develop the project and coordinate information collection to have the closest implementation" - Deputy Minister Hoang Dao Cuong said.
