The day I visited Mr. Sinh’s garden, the orange crop was ready for harvest, dyeing the mountainside a brilliant yellow. Gusts of wind blew across the Suoi Thau grassland, carrying the scent of ripe fruit far and wide. Flocks of wild birds that love berries flew back and forth, chirping from branch to branch, swinging on the treetops laden with fruit. The small paths crisscrossing the garden were bustling with the footsteps of traders looking to buy oranges, and of people coming to see the model of good economic performance.
Suoi Thau Hamlet, Coc Pai Town, Xin Man District, Ha Giang Province has 58 households, 100% of which are Mong ethnic people. 57/58 households here are poor or near-poor, so their economic life still faces many difficulties.
Talking to me, Mr. Sinh confided: "If we keep introducing advanced and highly effective farm models in other localities to encourage people to be determined to get rich, then as the village chief, I will be the pioneer to try it out"!
In 1999, the Mong man Sung Van Sinh, then 25 years old, was discharged from the army and returned to his hometown. Feeling sorry for his hometown, which was hidden behind distant mountains and had inconvenient transportation, Sinh decided to find a way to get rich, hoping that one day Suoi Thau would no longer be a difficult area! Thinking and doing, Sinh borrowed capital and invested in raising goats. After three years of experimentation, the goat raising model did not bring results. Sung Van Sinh switched to raising buffaloes and cows. For more than 10 years after that, Sinh's herd of buffaloes and cows was always the largest in town, maintaining a stable number of over 50.
“Maintaining the amount of food to ensure the herd’s development at that time was also a problem. The large number of individuals in the herd required careful care and disease prevention. Not to mention that the output market had to depend entirely on a few sources, so the capital turnover was slow. If we did not develop a large-scale farm model, but only stopped at the family level, the actual efficiency would not be high,” Mr. Sinh shared with me what was both his experience and his concerns.
Then in 2017, after researching and learning from the experiences of several models of growing high-value crops inside and outside the province, Mr. Sinh decided to completely convert the model of raising buffaloes and cows to develop the household economy, to growing fruit trees including: 1000 plum trees, 600 pear trees, 250 orange trees on an area of 3.7 hectares of garden land.
Realizing the economic development potential of these plants, in his role as Village Chief and a prestigious person of Suoi Thau Village, since 2020, Mr. Sung Van Sinh has encouraged people to boldly implement and develop the model. He analyzed: "Suoi Thau people can completely rest assured to test a small number and then gradually expand the area to a larger area later, because the locality has a favorable climate, suitable soil and I will directly guide and convey practical care experience". However, people are still hesitant to experiment because they have not seen with their own eyes the effectiveness that these plants bring!
Mr. Sinh informed: “With plums and pears, in 2023 the family harvested 27 tons of fruit, by 2024 thanks to favorable weather conditions the number of fruits harvested was 3 tons more than the previous year. After deducting investment costs such as fertilizer and care, the family earns more than 400 million VND each year. For 250 orange trees, the price ranges from 15,000-20,000 VND/kg, in 2023 the family earned 50 million, in 2024 the harvest was 80 million VND”.
From those proven results, in early 2024, 7 households in Suoi Thau village were supported by Mr. Sinh to try planting 10 hectares of pears. Realizing the initial difficulties of the people in terms of funding to buy fertilizers, the Village Chief, a prestigious person Sung Van Sinh shared: “Not only providing technical support, each year I also try to support each household in the form of giving away 300kg of fertilizer. Currently, the pear gardens of supported households such as Sung Quang Phong, Thao Seo Chu, Thao Van Seng, Sung Van Giong... are all growing and developing well”.
Having said that, the Village Chief, a prestigious person of Suoi Thau village, affirmed: "Suoi Thau will have to change. Compared to other localities of Xin Man district, Suoi Thau has many difficulties, but the more so, the more boldly we must become rich. If there is a good economic development model that no one has done, then we will be the ones to try it."
Xin Man is a border district located in the west of Ha Giang province. The whole district has 18 administrative units, including 1 town and 17 communes, with 160/187 extremely difficult villages, home to a community of 16 ethnic groups, with a population of over 72,000 people, of which over 69,300 are ethnic minorities, accounting for 96.2% of the total population of the district.
Currently, in Xin Man district, there are 186 prestigious people who are Party cell secretaries; village and hamlet chiefs; retired cadres; village elders; clan leaders; religious dignitaries and other members. These are people who are trusted by the people, have great influence in the community and the ability to rally the people.
