Why has the number of excellent 9th grade students in Ho Chi Minh City decreased sharply?

(Dan Tri) - In the 2024-2025 school year, Ho Chi Minh City only had 1,805 9th grade students winning city-level excellent student awards, a decrease of 176 awards compared to the previous school year.

On the afternoon of March 24, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City announced the results of excellent 9th grade students at the city level for the 2024-2025 school year.

Accordingly, out of a total of 3,553 candidates registered for the city-level 9th ​​grade excellent student contest this school year, 1,805 students won prizes, accounting for 51.08%. Including 85 first prizes (4.71%), 484 second prizes (26.81%), 1,236 third prizes (68.48%).

The number of excellent 9th grade students in Ho Chi Minh City this year decreased by 176 prizes compared to the previous school year, although the number of candidates in the two years was similar, this year only slightly increased the number of first and second prizes.

In the 2023-2024 school year, the number of prizes in the city is 1,981 out of a total of 3,598 students participating in the competition, accounting for 55.05%, including 72 first prizes (3.63%), 480 second prizes (24.23%) and 1,429 third prizes (72.13%).

According to the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, this year's 9th grade excellent student exam has many new points compared to the previous school year.

This is the first year students take the exam according to the 2018 General Education Program. Therefore, the exam questions are designed to assess thinking ability and the application of learned knowledge to solve practical problems.

This year is also the first year that Ho Chi Minh City organizes new exams in natural sciences, history and geography.

The award structure for the 9th grade excellent student exam at the city level in Ho Chi Minh City in the 2024-2025 school year only ranks individual prizes (First, Second, Third) for each subject; the percentage of students winning prizes is not more than 60% of the number of students taking the exam (in which the first prize winner is not more than 5% of the number of students winning prizes); the condition for winning a prize is that the candidate's exam must achieve 10/20 points or more.

In last year's exam, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City applied the method of calculating only individual prizes (First, Second, Third) for each subject; the percentage of students winning prizes did not exceed 60% of the students taking the exam.

In which, Third prize is considered from 10 to under 15 points, Second prize is considered from 15 to under 18 points, First prize is considered from 18 to 20 points.

Thus, it can be seen that the total number of excellent 9th grade student awards at the city level this school year has decreased sharply compared to the previous school year due to changes in the calculation of awards by the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City.
