Why are students afraid of scientific research?

Scientific research (NCKH) at universities is carried out in the form of subjects, graduation requirements or activities. Regardless of the form, many students think that they do not have enough time, documents and methods to carry out the research, so they often feel hesitant when starting research.

Many barriers of time, database...

With a busy schedule and many extracurricular activities, TH (a student at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City) said that time is the biggest "cost" to spend when doing scientific research for graduation. Each part of the research process takes up a lot of time. For example, members of H.'s group spend several hours reading and summarizing the content of a scientific article in English (20 A4 pages), not to mention synthesizing information from a large number of scientific articles.

The group research process also creates unexpected problems. According to TH, each member has different reading and presentation skills, leading to uneven quality in individual parts of a study. Therefore, the member assigned to edit will spend time reviewing and editing the entire content.

In addition, lecturers only provide general knowledge and the school's database is limited, so students doing scientific research like TH have to find documents online. Some expensive sources of documents are a "barrier" for students to access.

Students lack time, materials and methods, leading to fear of doing scientific research.

In addition, many students have research ideas but are still struggling to implement them. For example, Bui Thi Phuong Anh (a student of the Faculty of Japanese Language and Culture, University of Foreign Languages, Vietnam National University, Hanoi) has been interested in some scientific research topics for a long time but did not know where to start, so she had to put them aside until now. Or Phan Ngoc Linh (a student majoring in management, University of Economics, Ho Chi Minh City) found that scientific research knowledge at school was scattered; lecturers' instructions on implementation were complicated, making it difficult to apply in practice.

During the implementation process, some steps are easily affected by objective factors, which is also the reason why students are afraid of scientific research. "In the stage of 'spreading' the survey, many people answered 'just to finish', so the research model gave... 'strange' results!", Trinh Thi Thu Thao (student majoring in business administration, University of Economics, Ho Chi Minh City) shared.

Is scientific research a burden for students?

When asked about the benefits of scientific research, Bui Thi Phuong Anh said that she has not yet seen any benefits, and that it even adds to the burden. Meanwhile, TH (a student at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City) said that many students participate as a duty and are not interested in "dry" scientific research activities.

However, this activity still brings some undeniable benefits. For example, scientific research helps Nguyen Hoang Huy (a student majoring in chemistry and chemistry education, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education) improve his information processing skills, improve his English proficiency, and at the same time help Huy understand more about the applicability of his major. Or Trinh Thi Thu Thao (a student majoring in business administration, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics) can expand her network of relationships as well as learn how to defend her position through participating in scientific research.

Two factors that help students do scientific research

From that, Master Nguyen Huu Binh, lecturer of student scientific research management, Faculty of Sociology, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City, concluded that scientific research requires two factors: research inspiration and necessary resources (knowledge, people, time).

Students need to be inspired to do scientific research and provided with additional resources to carry it out.

Master Binh suggests that students should experience many activities related to scientific research organized by the faculty/school, participate in the operation of an event to stimulate interest and curiosity about scientific research before doing research on their own. After that, the master encourages students to develop highly practical topics, instead of choosing something "big and heavy" that leads to overwhelm and discouragement.

During the implementation process, students must link the knowledge they have learned with the research problem, finding connections in existing knowledge areas to develop the topic. In addition to the role of lecturers, students should read many documents and discuss regularly with lecturers if problems arise. Master Binh also emphasized that students need to maintain their inner will to pursue the research topic to the end and do it thoroughly if they want to reap "sweet fruit".
