On the way to visit Ms. Yen's 1-hectare Ruby guava plantation, Mr. Dinh Hvu, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Yang Bac commune, said: This is the first fruit tree cultivation model in the commune to have its products certified as 3-star OCOP at the district level in 2024. In particular, over the years, besides cultivating guava organically to enhance product value and ensure consumer health safety, Ms. Yen has also actively shared her experience in safe guava cultivation and guaranteed the purchase of products from other guava growers in the commune, contributing to helping them achieve stable income.

Taking advantage of the cool weather, Ms. Yen and her husband harvested guavas to send to customers. Ms. Yen said: Previously, on this land, she and her husband grew vegetables, but the income was unstable. In 2019, after learning about the knowledge and techniques of planting and caring for Ruby guavas from people in the Mekong Delta provinces, she and her husband decided to buy 100 guava saplings to plant experimentally on an area of 1 sao (approximately 1000 square meters). After a while, they realized that the Ruby guava variety adapted well to the local weather and soil conditions, the trees grew and developed well, and yielded fruit quickly. Therefore, in mid-2020, her family decided to convert the entire remaining area to growing Ruby guavas organically.

Accordingly, the couple composts cow manure with biological preparations to fertilize their orchard and makes their own biological control products from chili peppers, alcohol, and ginger to prevent pests and diseases in their guava trees. In addition, when the guavas reach a diameter of 2.5-3 cm, they use specialized fruit bags to protect them from pests and insects. “Although this cultivation process is labor-intensive, our family doesn’t have to spend money on pesticides. As a result, the guavas are crisp, sweet, and safe for consumers,” Ms. Yen said.

To ensure high yield and quality of guava, as soon as the guava trees bear small fruits, she prunes the tops to concentrate nutrients on the remaining fruit, preventing premature fruit drop and reducing yield; at the same time, it stimulates the guava trees to produce new flowers. Thanks to this, her family's guava orchard produces fruit year-round. On average, her family harvests nearly 20 tons of guava annually, selling them at prices ranging from 14,000 to 18,000 VND per kilogram. After deducting expenses, her family earns a profit of approximately 250 million VND.

According to Ms. Yen, thanks to its high quality and safety, her guava products are favored by customers both within and outside the province. In recent years, her Ruby guavas have also been purchased in large quantities by customers in Binh Dinh province and Ho Chi Minh City for resale. To ensure a stable supply, in recent years, she has collaborated with and provided technical support for organic Ruby guava cultivation to seven households within and outside the commune. At the same time, she guarantees the purchase of their produce, giving these households peace of mind in their farming.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hung (Jro Ktu village, Dak Yang) happily shared: "Thanks to Ms. Yen's technical support, I've been able to cultivate nearly 4 acres of guava trees effectively. Through monitoring, I've found that guavas grown organically thrive and are less susceptible to pests and diseases. Recently, my guava orchard yielded over 1 ton of fruit, and Ms. Yen has guaranteed the purchase of the produce, so my family feels very secure."

Nguyen Trung Phi (Tan Lap village, Tan An commune, Dak Po district) said: “My family has 4 sao (approximately 0.4 hectares) of guava trees planted since 2020. Thanks to Ms. Yen's guidance on organic guava cultivation techniques, the trees grow and develop well, yielding high productivity and quality. With this area, my family harvests an average of over 7 tons of guava each year. Thanks to Ms. Yen's support in product distribution, my family has a stable income.”

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Nho, Vice Chairman of the Dak Po District Farmers' Association, said: Currently, there are about 300 hectares of fruit trees in the district, mainly guava, dragon fruit, longan, etc. In recent times, farmers in the district have been proactive in researching and studying safe fruit tree care techniques to enhance product value. In particular, Ms. Nguyen Thi Yen's household in Yang Bac commune has applied natural methods in controlling pests and harmful insects to protect crops, creating safe, high-quality products.

In the coming period, the District Farmers' Association will promote and encourage its members and farmers in the area to continue applying safe fruit tree cultivation techniques to enhance product value. At the same time, it will actively support farmers in promoting their products to ensure stable market access.
