Cold prevention for livestock and crops
Starting from October, Mr. Duong Van Thanh, Director of the Thanh Long Beef Cooperative, My Bang Commune (Yen Son) has always been ready with all plans to prevent hunger and cold for his herd of hundreds of cows. Mr. Thanh shared that the cooperative is a large-scale livestock cooperative, with an average of 200-300 cows/batch, so he is especially concerned about the health of the livestock. As for cows, they can endure hot weather, but if they are not fed enough and kept warm in cold weather, they are susceptible to disease. To ensure the herd grows and develops healthily, Mr. Thanh has covered the entire system of cow pens with tarpaulin to avoid wind and rain; the barn floor is always kept dry and clean. As for the diet, both quantity and quality will be increased.
According to Mr. Thanh, in warm weather, an adult cow only consumes 3-5 kg of concentrate (bran) and a certain amount of roughage per day. However, on cold winter days, the food ration will be increased by 20-30% and divided into many meals. To ensure enough food for the cows, in addition to the grass area grown on the farm, Thanh Long Cooperative also contracts with a number of cooperatives in Son Duong and Yen Son districts to supply biomass corn and rolled straw.
Mr. Thanh said: Many years of raising livestock have given him a lot of experience in taking care of livestock, especially large livestock such as buffaloes and cows to grow healthily in winter. That is to increase the food ration, balance enough starchy food with green roughage, give buffaloes and cows warm water to drink, mix salt, keep the barn floor dry to limit foot-and-mouth disease in livestock.
People in Trung Yen commune (Son Duong) cover the base of trees with plastic to keep them warm and protect them from the cold.
Not only livestock, but also crop areas and aquatic products are carefully cared for and protected from frost and cold. Mr. Vu Van Thuyen, Dong Gianh village, Duc Ninh commune (Ham Yen) said: His family grows 1 hectare of cauliflower, tomatoes... at this time tomatoes are starting to bear fruit. However, the sudden drop in temperature along with frost poses a high risk of leaf damage and young fruit falling. To avoid damage, Mr. Thuyen had to buy black nets to make a frost cover for the entire tomato area. According to Mr. Thuyen, in addition to covering to limit frost from causing leaf damage and young fruit falling, he also has to cover the base of the tree with straw to keep the tree warm and moist.
Comrade Ha Xuan Khanh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Duc Ninh Commune (Ham Yen) said: In these days, the weather suddenly turned cold, the temperature at night and early morning dropped sharply, affecting the growth and development of crops. To protect the crop area, especially the winter vegetable area serving the markets of Tuyen Quang City and Ha Giang, the commune has increased propaganda on the loudspeaker system of communes and wards, advising farmers not to plant intercropping vegetables when the outdoor temperature is lower than 15 degrees Celsius.
For the vegetable area that is ready for harvest, the commune encourages people to harvest early and on time to ensure productivity and avoid damage; use nylon, straw, and rice husks to cover the beds and make shelters to protect crops from the cold. At the same time, take care of and water enough moisture according to the nutritional needs of each plant on cold days; fertilize fully and balanced to keep plants healthy and increase their ability to resist the cold. Especially, on days with frost and cold, people need to spray water on the surface of the leaves to make them fall off and dissolve the dew to avoid leaf burn when sunlight passes through...
Absolutely not subjective
Comrade Nguyen Cong Ham, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said: This year's weather is very unusual and difficult to predict. In fact, experts believe that winter will come earlier this year, but during October and November, the temperature remained stable at 25 - 30 degrees Celsius and it was not until early December that the weather turned cold. This can easily lead to complacency among small-scale producers and breeders.
The cows of Thanh Long Cooperative, My Bang Commune (Yen Son) have increased food rations during the winter.
Comrade Nguyen Cong Ham emphasized: After the losses from the circulation of storm No. 3, production activities have been initially restored. In order to achieve the goal of replacing the winter crop with the summer crop, the Department has issued a document requesting the branches to closely coordinate with the professional departments of the districts and cities to increase forces to the grassroots, inspect, urge, guide localities and support people to urgently implement effective cold prevention measures for crops and livestock. By December 10, inter-disciplinary inspection teams including livestock and crop cultivation were established and conducted inspections of cold prevention for crops and livestock.
Comrade Tran Hai Tuyen, Head of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, said: The unit is checking the work of preventing and combating cold in the districts of Na Hang, Chiem Hoa, and Lam Binh. Initial records show that people have actively and proactively prepared plans to prevent and combat cold to protect their own property.
Ms. Ha Thi Vi, Ha Lang commune (Chiem Hoa) said: Her family raises buffalo for breeding, usually letting them roam in the forest, but in recent days the temperature has dropped, so the family has herded the buffalo back to the barn to get grass and corn to eat. Ms. Vi shared: "The buffalo is a valuable asset, so farmers like me will not neglect it!"
According to the report of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the total livestock herd, winter crop area, and fruit trees are still growing well, with no signs of extreme weather affecting production activities. However, the weather will have many unusual and unpredictable developments. To protect assets and limit losses, farm owners, households, and producers must not be subjective, regularly monitor weather developments, and proactively take measures to respond.
