"The missile was detected by air defense forces and destroyed in the Kaluga region," the ministry said. Meanwhile, Kaluga Governor Vladislav Shapsha announced that there were no casualties in the incident.
The Russian Defense Ministry also said that Crimea, a territory Russia annexed in 2014, was also attacked. Specifically, nine drones were destroyed by Russian air defenses, while 33 were disabled by electronic warfare and crashed in Crimea without reaching their targets.
Mikhail Razvozhayev, governor of the Crimean port city of Sevastopol, said on the messaging app Telegram that several drones were destroyed on the outskirts of Sevastopol.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the attacks. Russian airports near Moscow were also grounded for several hours. The attack was the latest in a string of similar incidents since two drones struck the Kremlin in early May.
