A mysterious drone has been spotted hovering over the British aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth. This comes after strange UAVs were spotted hovering over three British air bases.
According to Bild , the 1.5x1.5m UAV tailed the British Navy's flagship warship as it entered the port of Hamburg, Germany, over the weekend.
The German military posted guards around the port and attempted to target the drone with an HP-47 jammer before it diverted, according to Bild .
On 23 November, the US Air Force also revealed that “small unmanned aircraft systems” had flown over UK bases at Lakenheath and Mildenhall, in Suffolk, as well as Feltwell, in Norfolk, last week. Britain has not commented on the information.
The US Air Force said it had the “right to defend” its UK bases from any threat. It did not comment on what defence mechanisms would be activated.
While it is unclear who carried out the drones, the incidents come in a week that has seen a significant escalation of tensions between Russia and the West.
For the first time, Ukraine has attacked targets inside Russia with long-range missiles supplied by the US and UK.
In response, Russia fired a newly developed medium-range hypersonic ballistic missile in an attack on Dnipro, Ukraine. It was the most powerful missile used in the war so far.
The Kremlin called the attack a message to the West that Moscow would respond forcefully to any "reckless" actions by Ukraine's allies, while Russian President Vladimir Putin warned of retaliation against countries that allowed Kiev to use weapons against Russia.
HMS Queen Elizabeth - the largest warship ever built by the British navy - went on sea trials for the first time in June 2017. It is worth 4.5 billion USD.
With an advanced design and modern weapons systems, this is the main warship of the Royal Navy for the next 50 years. The ship has a displacement of about 65,000 tons, is 280m long and is capable of carrying nearly 40 fighter planes and about 700 sailors.
