(Dan Tri) - The story of a 13-year-old male student helping his mother give birth, with instructions over the phone from medical staff, has caused a stir on Chinese social networks.

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí03/04/2025

The teenage boy's calmness and precise actions following instructions helped his mother give birth successfully, and his baby brother was born healthy. The story of the boy living in Fujian province (China) was shared by an emergency center with the Chinese media.

The boy's calmness and ability to deliver the baby surprised even the medical staff. The mother suddenly had her water break at home when she was 37 weeks pregnant. The pain was so severe that the mother could not walk. The teenager quickly called an ambulance.

Chen Chaoshun, a paramedic at an emergency center in Fujian Province, responded to the call. Through the signs described by the boy, Chen knew that the woman needed urgent help while waiting for an ambulance to arrive.

Chen instructed the boy to stay by his mother's side, comfort her, and support her during labor. Following Chen's instructions, the boy helped his mother get into the right position to facilitate labor. He closely monitored her physical and mental health.

As a result, a healthy baby was born through natural birth. This was the woman’s third child. When the ambulance arrived, the mother and her three children were taken to the hospital. Both the mother and the newborn were in good health.

The story quickly became a hit with the public in the country of a billion people, many people expressed admiration for the 13-year-old boy.

One person commented: "The boy kept his composure so well and cooperated effectively with the medical staff. He saved his mother and his brother! Later he can proudly tell his brother that he was the one who brought him into this world."

However, there are also opinions that the boy may experience some psychological effects after this experience: "The mother should take her child to see a psychologist to help him overcome the problems that may arise after such an age-inappropriate experience."

Along with the compliments, some people questioned the mother's situation: "This is not a story worth praising. Why would a pregnant woman who was about to give birth be left alone at home with such a child? This family is very lucky, but I want to ask where their husband and other relatives are?"

Emergency childbirth is when the time from the beginning of pain to the birth is less than 3 hours. Women who have given birth before are at high risk of this situation. Home birth generally has dangerous and risky factors. Relatives need to closely monitor the condition of the mother and take her to the hospital as soon as possible.

Despite mixed opinions surrounding the viral story, the Chinese public generally still praises and admires the 13-year-old boy. Many parents also realize the importance of teaching their children early how to react in emergency situations, so that they can help themselves, their loved ones, and those around them.

11 things to keep in mind when teaching children about emergency response skills

Does your child know how to handle an emergency? This is an important question for parents to consider. When children are equipped with the skills to respond to emergencies calmly and effectively, they will be safer because they will be better able to handle them.

To help your child be prepared for most emergencies, parents need to provide practical steps that cover a variety of emergency situations. Parents need to work with their children to identify common hazards, develop a response plan, practice basic first aid, and regularly increase their understanding of the necessary response skills.

Helping children have skills to deal with emergency situations will give parents some peace of mind, because parents know that their children have certain knowledge and skills.

- Teach children how to call for help: Start with the simplest knowledge, which is to instruct children on situations that require emergency calls, as well as how to call briefly and effectively to provide full information, including information about identity and location. Children should also learn the phone numbers of their parents and relatives, and know how to contact their parents and relatives when necessary.

- Help children get familiar with emergency warnings: Explain the meaning of the different types of sirens in the community where they live, and guide children on how to react when they hear these sirens.

- Learn about emergency plans at your child's school: Parents should learn about emergency plans at schools or places where their children frequently visit.

Parents should familiarize themselves with and understand these plans, then review and practice them with their children at home to ensure that they understand and remember the steps to be taken. This also helps parents to provide consistent knowledge and skills to all stakeholders to make teaching children more effective.

- Identify common local emergencies: Parents should proactively learn about potential risks in their living area, such as earthquakes, floods, fires, etc. Being aware of risk factors will help parents develop appropriate response plans.

- Update knowledge: Parents should proactively learn about how to respond in emergency situations to convey accurate information to their children. If your child has a phone, set up location sharing so that family members can quickly find each other in an emergency.

If your child is old enough, show him or her where the first aid kit is located in your home, as well as what items are in the kit (Illustration: iStock).

- Identify two exits for each room: Identify two escape routes with your child in each room of the house. Periodically practice using the escape routes with your child to ensure that they know how to escape safely in different situations.

- Establish two safe meeting points: Family members should agree on two meeting points in case of an emergency so that members can quickly reunite. One meeting point should be close to home, such as under a large tree or a large yard near the house. The other meeting point should be further away, in case the area near home is no longer safe.

- Agree on a "safe word": Set a secret word within the family. This is especially useful if you ask a family friend to pick up your child in an emergency. Your child needs to understand the meaning and importance of this word and only cooperate with the other person in a truly urgent situation, if the other person reads the word correctly.

- Prepare a first aid kit: Parents should prepare a first aid kit and necessary medicines at home.

During times of special warnings of emergency risks, such as natural disasters, families should prepare essential items, including three days' worth of drinking water, non-perishable food, flashlights, spare batteries, phone chargers, and blankets for each family member to carry in case of emergency.

First aid items and medications should be checked periodically to ensure they are still in good condition.

- Teach children basic first aid skills: If your child is old enough, show them where the first aid kit is in the house, as well as what items are in the kit. Parents can teach their children some simple skills such as washing wounds, basic bandaging, recognizing signs of heat stroke, dehydration, etc.

- Practice calmness: Staying calm in an emergency will help children feel safer. Therefore, parents should show a calm and patient attitude when discussing and practicing emergency response with their children. Parents also need to reassure children that these preparations are necessary to ensure the safety of the whole family.

Emergencies can happen at any time without warning, the best way to protect your family and loved ones is to be prepared. Equipping your children with the skills to respond calmly and effectively when faced with an emergency is something that parents should do early.
