Hanoi Department of Physical Education and Sports (DTTT) directed the Gymnastics team to explain after athlete Pham Nhu Phuong reported that they still received money for not practicing overtime.
After the controversy surrounding the embezzlement of bonuses, today athlete Pham Nhu Phuong publicly revealed that the Gymnastics team clocked in overtime, even though they did not actually practice. After receiving this allowance, the athlete must return 50% to the coach to supplement the team fund, with the purpose of serving professional work, internal and external affairs.
Establishing separate funds in sports teams has long been prohibited. Therefore, the Department of Sports and Physical Training requested the team's coaching staff and the Hanoi National Sports Training Center (NHTST) to explain athlete Nhu Phuong's reflection. "The coaching staff must provide lesson plans and overtime training plans," said Director Dang Ha Viet. "The NHTST must also prove that the team practiced and took attendance. Otherwise, this is completely wrong."

According to Mr. Viet, if there are any violations, the Department will resolutely handle them, even though the coaches are highly qualified and the team is concentrating and preparing to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics qualifiers. "We have to work closely because this is related to money," the Department Director said, adding that he has sent a document to national sports training centers across the country, requesting a review of all teams regarding the illegal establishment of separate funds.
This afternoon, the Department worked with Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Dao Cuong, the Hanoi National Sports Training Center and the Gymnastics team to clarify newly reported issues, as well as information from the past two days.
In the previous explanatory report sent to the Ministry, the Department of Sports and Physical Training concluded that not calling Pham Nhu Phuong to the national team in 2024 was in accordance with the procedure, because this athlete was not in Vietnam to practice. The major fault in this matter lies with the coaches in charge, Nguyen Thuy Duong and Nguyen Ha Thanh, who hid information and did not report the athlete's request to go abroad to the head coach and the Department of Physical Education, Hanoi National Sports Training Center.
Regarding the collection of percentages from the athletes’ bonuses, the Department affirmed that the violation was caused by Coach Thuy Duong. The collected amounts were not related to the team, but only between this coach and the athletes at the Hanoi Sports Training and Competition Center - the management agency of Nhu Phuong, Coach Thuy Duong and Ha Thanh. Currently, both of these coaches have had to leave the team.
Nhu Phuong is a bright face of female gymnastics when she won the gold medal in the 2018 Youth Olympics. At the 31st SEA Games in Vietnam, she won two silver medals in the team and uneven bars, and two bronze medals in the balance beam and freestyle.
After being removed from the training camp in early 2024, Nhu Phuong submitted a retirement application at the age of 20. The Hanoi athlete said that the time the team approved the list coincided with the time she requested leave to travel abroad and visit friends. Nhu Phuong affirmed that before leaving, she had sent a leave application to the coach at the Hanoi Sports Training and Exercise Center. After that, she denounced having to pay 10% of the bonus to coach Thuy Duong when winning a medal, from 30% to 50% of the bonus and contribute to a fund outside of the monthly regulations.
